VinFuture Scientist: “Smarter AI is Safer”

Linh Đan |

According to experts, artificial intelligence (AI) will become increasingly intelligent, even surpassing humans, but AI will not control humans.

Prof. Yann LeCun is one of the world's leading scientists participating in the discussion "Deploying Artificial Intelligence (AI) in practice" taking place on December 4 in Hanoi. This is the third discussion in the "Science for Life" discussion series, part of the VinFuture Science and Technology Week 2024.

The topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI) will return in the VinFuture talk series “Science for Life”.

AI is completely changing the way people do their daily work.

AI is now a fundamental technology, revolutionizing many industries. The most advanced AI models today (Llama 3, GPT-4 and Gemini 1.5) not only improve natural language processing capabilities, but also open up many practical application opportunities, becoming a powerful assistant for humans in handling daily work. However, AI's ability to collect and analyze huge amounts of information raises concerns about personal information security and data abuse.

According to Dr. Xuedong Huang - a member of the VinFuture Prize Council, the world's leading computer scientist in spoken language processing, co-author of more than 170 patents in the United States, two books and more than 100 articles in the field of AI, a reality that has been and will continue to take place more deeply in life is that AI will become an important companion, helping to optimize people's daily tasks.

For example, instead of spending a lot of time reading a 500-page book, we can use AI tools to summarize the content and outline the important ideas of that book according to the user's request.

“The tools we have from AI will completely change the way we do our daily tasks, whether it is scientific research or office work. Increased work efficiency will promote two basic human abilities: learning and absorbing information,” said Dr. Huang.

Dr. Xuedong Huang - Chief Technology Officer of Zoom Group, affirmed that AI will be a powerful assistant for humans in the future.

Mr. Huang emphasized that AI's natural language processing ability helps people expand their understanding and express language better. He said that currently, AI can understand about 200 out of 7,000 languages being used in the world, while humans usually only speak less than 5 languages proficiently.

“AI will participate in the process of improving reading comprehension and expressing our knowledge and ideas. I believe AI will gradually understand thousands of languages and erase language barriers, bringing people closer together,” Dr. Huang shared.

Dr. Bui Hai Hung - General Director of VinAI (Vingroup Corporation) - commented: "The future lies not only in creating more powerful AI technologies, but also in bringing this technology to everyone's reach.

However, running AI models requires advanced infrastructure and huge computing resources. This creates a big barrier to widespread AI application, especially in developing markets. To solve this problem, we need AI optimization measures, making AI efficient and lightweight enough to run well on different devices and infrastructure conditions.

Smarter AI is safer

According to Dr. Xuedong Huang, every technology has its pros and cons, the important thing is to have a balanced approach to ensure safe use. “We really need to take advantage of AI, but not rely on it completely. We need to ensure that AI cooperates with humans to get the job done, while not underestimating human critical thinking,” Dr. Huang commented.

In response to concerns that AI systems will become increasingly intelligent and able to compete with and control humans, Professor LeCun does not think that will happen.

“AI can answer all our questions and help us in our daily lives. One day, they may be smarter than humans. But we should not be threatened by that, but feel that there is an opportunity to use AI to make our lives better. Imagine you have a team of intelligent employees who are AI technologies that help you work,” Professor LeCun explained.

Unlike most researchers in the field, Professor LeCun maintains a very optimistic attitude about the future of AI and the potential of this technology: “I think the difference between us is that I have faith in organizations and research institutes, which will maximize the benefits of AI technology for good. We need to continue to develop smarter AI, because smarter AI is safer."
