Recorded in specialized vegetable growing areas in My Xuyen ward and Ngoc To, Nhu Gia, Tai Van communes (Can Tho City), the prices of leafy vegetables such as mustard greens, bok choy, lettuce are sharply decreasing compared to more than a month ago. Many types are only a few thousand VND per kg, not enough to cover production and harvest costs.
In Tai Van commune, Ms. Lam Thi Han, a vegetable farmer for many years, said that after the storm and high tide in November 2025, all 4,000m2 of her family's green vegetables were flooded and heavily damaged. At that time, green vegetables increased sharply in price, but her family did not have a source of goods to sell.
After the damage, I had to borrow money from my younger brother to buy seeds and fertilizer for re-production. Meanwhile, the price of seeds increased by 20-30% compared to before, input costs increased significantly. By harvest time, vegetable prices dropped too low," Ms. Han shared.
According to Ms. Han, watercress and mustard greens are currently only sold for 3,000 - 4,000 VND/kg, water spinach is less than 6,000 VND/kg. The price of watercress seeds alone has reached 85,000 VND/kg, each crop requires about 40 kg. "The price is too cheap, traders only choose really beautiful vegetables to buy, otherwise they cannot sell them on the market, so they have to pluck them for fish to eat," she said. Faced with this reality, her family temporarily stopped growing leafy vegetables, switched to growing beans, loofah, and gourd to reduce costs and risks.
In Nhu Gia commune, Ms. Quach Thi Dao, who is harvesting lettuce, said that the current price is only 3,000 - 4,000 VND/kg, while more than a month ago it was up to 20,000 VND/kg. "When the price was high, there was a lot of rain, vegetables did not grow, very few were sold. Thinking the price was still maintained, I reinvested, but now the price has fallen deeply, no signs of recovery have been seen," she worried.

Sharing the same situation, Mr. Lam Hoai Phong in My Xuyen ward said that nearly 1,000m2 of his family's sweet cabbage could only sell for 5,000 VND/kg, while more than a month earlier the price was at 15,000 VND/kg. To prepare for the Tet crop, he converted the entire area to growing cabbage and broccoli instead of continuing to grow short-term leafy vegetables.
In the opposite direction, some types of vegetables still maintain high prices. Farmers in Nhu Gia commune (Can Tho City) said that scallions are currently sold at a price of about 50,000 VND/kg, cabbage is 16,000 VND/kg, chives and peppers are still hovering at a high level, of which peppers are up to 75,000 VND/kg. The main reason is that these types are difficult to grow, have a long growing time and low yield.

In the context of fluctuating prices, vegetable farmers are calculating cautiously for the Tet crop. Many households actively switch to growing vegetables with long growth periods such as cabbage, broccoli, cucumbers, bitter melon, gourds, pumpkins to harvest right on the peak Tet consumption season, expecting prices to be more stable than leafy vegetables. Others choose to improve, let the soil rest and grow vegetables to harvest after Tet to welcome the consumption period on the full moon of the first lunar month.
However, input costs are still a major pressure when the price of seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides is maintained at a high level. Therefore, many farmers only plant sparingly, divide the area or diversify crops to disperse risks.
