Can Tho farmers share secrets to staying up when rice prices fluctuate

PHƯƠNG ANH |

Can Tho - In the context of fluctuating rice prices on the market and tending to decrease, many farmers still maintain stable incomes.

For nearly 10 years, each harvest season, the entire area of more than 1 hectare of rice of Mr. Lam Van Hung (My Xuyen ward, Can Tho city, formerly Dai Tam commune, My Xuyen district, Soc Trang province) has been guaranteed by local businesses at stable prices.

Previously, rice production was very difficult because we had to find traders ourselves. Since linking up with ST rice planting enterprise, we no longer have to worry about output. The enterprise provides seeds right from the beginning of the crop, supports transportation when harvesting; high rice prices buy higher than committed, and when the price is low, they still buy higher than the market," Mr. Hung said.

According to Mr. Hung, certified ST25 rice variety has many advantages such as strong plants, standing leaves, less deposition of dew, so it is good at resisting diseases, reducing the number of spraying times, helping to reduce production costs while the yield is still high.

Mr. Hua Thanh Nghia, Director of Nghia Thang Agricultural Cooperative (My Xuyen ward, Can Tho city), said that the Cooperative has linked rice consumption with businesses for more than 20 years. "We close prices very favorably. Summer-Autumn crop 2025, although market prices decreased, businesses still maintained a purchasing level of 9,000 VND/kg. With an investment cost of about 3 million VND/1,000 m2, yield reached 6 - 6.3 tons/ha, farmers achieved an average profit of 50 - 55 million VND/ha/crop," Mr. Nghia informed.

According to Mr. Nghia, not only is the entire output guaranteed, farmers are also completely assured about the purchasing stage. Farmers hand over rice to businesses, and after weighing, they are paid immediately on the same day. Even rice that does not meet the standards for seedling, businesses also buy it to grind rice or make plates, helping farmers no longer worry about output.

Mr. Nghia said that in the recent Summer-Autumn crop, the Cooperative was selected to participate in the Sustainable Development Project of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice. Farmers are applied interspersed wet-dry irrigation techniques, helping rice roots to thrive, plants to be strong, limit falling and reabsorbing nutrients from straw. Thanks to the synchronous application of this process, the yield reached 6-7 tons/ha, in some places up to 7.5 tons/ha, while investment costs were reduced by 20-30%.

At Hung Loi Agricultural Cooperative (Dai Ngai commune, Can Tho city), Mr. Truong Van Hung - Director of the Cooperative, said that the unit participating in the VnSAT Project for the period 2016 - 2020, helps farmers switch from traditional practices to applying techniques such as "3 reductions 3 increases", "1 must 5 reductions", thereby reducing seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation water and post-harvest losses.

Currently, the Cooperative is also implementing a pilot model of the Project of 1 million hectares of high-quality rice with a scale of 50 hectares/46 households. After 2 years of implementation, the yield reached 6.3 - 6.5 tons/ha, the average profit was 47 million VND/ha, higher than fields outside the model by 4-5 million VND/ha, thanks to input costs being reduced by more than 20%.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, in 2025, the whole city planted 721,073 hectares of rice, with a yield of about 4.7 million tons. On a seasonal basis, Can Tho maintains a large field model with an area of 84,819 hectares, of which over 30% of the area has consumption links through businesses, cooperatives and cooperative groups.

Implementing the Project on Sustainable Development of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta region to 2030, Can Tho City has implemented 12 pilot models, applying synchronously sustainable farming solutions such as mechanized sowing, buried fertilization, reducing the amount of seeds to 60 - 80 kg/ha, reducing nitrogen fertilizer by over 30%, reducing pesticide spraying by 2-3 times and applying interspersed wet-dry irrigation. Thanks to that, rice yield is 0.3 - 0.7 tons/ha higher than traditional production, some models reach 8 - 9.5 tons/ha; costs are reduced by more than 1.1 million VND/ha, profits increase by an additional 1.3 - 6.5 million VND/ha.

From the pilot results, the city has replicated 65 models on 7,830 hectares and gradually changed farming practices, creating quality rice products to meet market demand.
