Enhance mini flower basket
At this time, Mr. Truong Van Tan - a farmer in Pho Tho - Ba Bo ornamental flower village (Binh Thuy district, Can Tho city) - is busy planting flowers to supply the Tet market. This year, this farmer plans to plant about 500 pots of marigolds and increase the number of short-term mini flower baskets, which are both easy to care for and have been popular with consumers in recent years.
Mr. Huynh Van Bang - Director of Pho Tho Ornamental Flower Cooperative (Binh Thuy District, Can Tho City) - informed that this year, the flower village is expected to supply the market with 100,000 - 200,000 flower baskets of all kinds. Currently, the cooperative members have planted traditional raspberry chrysanthemums, Korean raspberry chrysanthemums and are continuing to plant more petunias, diamond chrysanthemums, etc.
Grasping the market demand, the cooperative is increasing new types of flowers, mini flower baskets, reducing marigolds and Taiwanese chrysanthemums. Mini flower baskets are compact, beautiful and long-lasting, so they are sought after by customers, who buy them to display on altars, altars of the God of Heaven and God of Wealth instead of fresh flowers.
In previous years, the experimental planting was small in quantity while the demand was high, the supply of mini flower baskets could not meet the demand. This year, the cooperative decided to increase the number of mini flower baskets to supply the 2025 Tet market. The mini flower varieties are carefully selected and imported from the Southern Fruit Institute to ensure quality.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong Lan - Deputy Head of the Agricultural Extension Station of Binh Thuy District (Can Tho City) - said that in order for ornamental flowers to be of good quality and attract customers, the station always tries its best to support people throughout the process of planting, caring for and consuming.
“We monitor and forecast consumption to farmers to balance the production of seeds appropriately, avoiding surplus goods. The station also regularly informs about the production situation of neighboring provinces to advise farmers to diversify local products to easily access the market,” said Ms. Lan.
Mid-range price segment
Mr. Tan shared that most of the flowers planted this year are in the mid-range price segment. Marigolds are expected to cost around 70,000 VND/pair, mini flowers from 20,000 VND/basket. “I mainly grow flowers with prices ranging from cheap to mid-range, suitable for customers’ budgets, so that everyone can have flowers to display for Tet,” Mr. Tan confided.
According to Director of Pho Tho Ornamental Flower Cooperative Huynh Van Bang, this year, the cooperative grows all kinds of flowers from mid-range to expensive, in which the mid-range segment accounts for the majority to meet the needs of many customer groups.
“High prices can easily make people hesitant, so the cooperative focuses on producing mid-range products to reach the majority. We also produce some high-end, expensive products for those in need,” said Mr. Bang.
According to information from the Binh Thuy District Agricultural Extension Station, the number of ornamental flowers planted in the 2025 Tet season is expected to be equivalent to that of 2024, estimated at over 200,000 baskets. Up to now, 1/3 of the expected number has been planted. In the coming time, farmers will continue to plant other short-term flowers in time to serve the Lunar New Year market.
