On December 29, 2022, the Vietnam Maritime Administration issued Decision No. 1909/QD-CHHVN on promulgating the Basic Standards on Vietnam Green Port Criteria.
This set of standards includes 6 specific action criteria: Clean energy, energy saving, information technology application, resource use, environmental protection and green management.
On that basis, many businesses and port owners in Quang Ninh have proactively implemented it, initially bringing clear results.
Tuan Chau International Passenger Port currently has 2 ports with a total length of over 6 km, which can receive 2,000 passenger pick-up and drop-off ships at the same time.
Implementing the green port model, the unit has applied ship management software, reduced procedures time, limited carbon emissions; planted trees, covered the port area with green, added a roof system, waiting room, electronic directional signs and booked tickets online.
At Ao Tien International Port (Van Don Special Zone) with a scale of nearly 30 hectares, designed with the theme of "green space", it can receive 150 cruise ships and aim for a capacity of 4 million visitors/year. After 3 years of operation, the port has welcomed about 600,000 visitors/year.
Mr. Ta Duc Quyen - Port Executive Director - said: "We have applied 360-degree automatic monitoring technology with a camera, helping to manage ships and reduce emissions. At the same time, sign with island communes to reduce plastic waste, replace plastic bags with biological bags".

From 2020 to present, the province has attracted nearly VND65,000 billion in non-budgetary capital for 10 infrastructure projects and seaport services.
Of which, Van Ninh Port Phase 1 has a total investment of over VND 2,248 billion. The project covers an area of about 82.79 hectares, the main wharf is 500 m long, capable of receiving 2 ships of 20,000 DWT or 3 ships of 10,000 DWT; Yen Hung Liquid Port Project in Bac Tien Phong Industrial Park has a total investment of nearly 800 billion VND. This is the first and largest liquid cargo port in the country, started construction in October 2024, expected to be exploited before the fourth quarter of 2025.
According to the Department of Construction of Quang Ninh, in the coming time, the province will issue mechanisms and policies to encourage ports to implement the "green port" criteria. This includes providing shore-based electricity to replace generators for moored ships, building waste management processes, saving energy, and using clean energy.
