Building a solid foundation from the early days
In telecommunications networks, data such as calls, videos or Internet access is not transmitted directly between users but must go through many intermediate layers. In which, Site Router plays the role of a "transit station", connecting 3G, 4G, 5G broadcasting stations or fixed networks to the core network - which processes and coordinates all traffic.
This device requires high processing capacity, low latency, stable operation and good security, so the market has long been mainly held by large technology corporations.

From the period 2012–2013, Viettel High Tech set a goal to master this equipment to reduce dependence on foreign technology. By 2017, the project was implemented more methodically, focusing on building research and development capacity.
Initially, the team consisted of only a few engineers, without experience in developing similar products. They started from researching international standards, technical documents and open source platforms to build systems from basic layers.
Instead of developing it entirely, the group focuses on core components such as data processing architecture, routing mechanisms and performance and security optimization solutions. At the same time, Viettel cooperates with chipset providers such as Qualcomm, Broadcom, Marvell to take advantage of the hardware platform, shorten development time but still master core technology.

The testing process was inevitably difficult. In the early stages in Hanoi, the system encountered prolonged jailbreaks, forcing the team to review the entire architecture and source code. These experiences helped the team understand that mastering the device is not only about developing enough features, but also about understanding how the system operates in all conditions.
Right from the first version, the system has a scale of millions of source code lines. After more than four years of development, the product has undergone more than 20,000 tests of function and performance, and has been verified on Viettel's real-world network.
Site Router versions with speeds of 10Gbps and 100Gbps have now been deployed in many provinces and cities, contributing to ensuring stable connection for the network system.
Choosing a separate path to "Go Global
From a small initial group, the research force has expanded in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, gradually forming capabilities in the field of transmission - one of the important platforms of telecommunications.
2021 marked a turning point when Site Router was officially put into operation on Viettel network, gradually replacing imported equipment, and at the same time achieving standard certification for a large-scale system.
This capacity is not only shown in one product. By April 2026, Viettel High Tech was awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces, recognizing its contributions in research and mastering strategic technology.

In the field of telecommunications, Viettel has gradually mastered important components of the network, from radio equipment, transmission to the core network - the foundation for technologies such as 5G.
According to the Group's leaders, the shift from "domestic ownership" to "international market participation" is an inevitable step when capacity has been verified.
Currently, Site Router is being prepared for testing in markets such as Peru, Mozambique and UAE.
A difference of Viettel High Tech is the ability to customize products according to each customer's requirements. In overseas testing projects, the team of engineers regularly works 24/7 due to time zone differences, ready to handle unexpected requests.
In parallel with Site Router, Viettel also develops terminal devices such as XGSPON ONT modems and new generation Wi-Fi standards such as Wi-Fi 7, Wi-Fi 8 to complete the product ecosystem.
From gradually mastering an important infrastructure device, Viettel is showing a clear direction: deeply participating in the core technology layers of the telecommunications network and gradually bringing the "Make in Vietnam" product to the international market.
