According to the Department of Fisheries, as of September 15, 2024, the area of pangasius farming is estimated at 4,241 hectares (equal to 98% compared to the same period in 2023). Pangasius output is estimated at 1,241,000 tons (equal to 103% compared to the same period in 2023). Pangasius export turnover in the first 9 months of the year reached 1.5 billion USD, up 9% compared to the same period in 2023.
However, Vietnam's pangasius export activities are facing many difficulties. Some countries that develop pangasius production should reduce imports from Vietnam; climate change, seawater encroachment deep into the mainland...
In addition, trade barriers from import markets are tightening, restricting the use of HCG hormones in pangasius breeding production in the EU...
At the conference "Discussing solutions for developing pangasius breeds to cope with climate change and international trade barriers" held today (October 11), Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien said that despite some achievements, the pangasius industry, especially the production and breeding of fish breeds, still has limitations that need to be overcome.
"The average survival rate is very low in both the fry and fingerling stages, even when there is a good supply of broodstock, favorable spawning and abundant hatching fry. The main causes may be the decline in water quality and climate change leading to negative changes in basic production conditions.
In addition, there are disease problems in the rearing stage from fingerlings to fingerlings; quality loss during the transportation of fingerlings from the hatchery's nursery pond to the farm's rearing pond.
Resources for developing pangasius breeds are still limited, including infrastructure investment or breeding research programs. Annual funding for implementation is often slow," the Deputy Minister emphasized.
Also at the conference, according to a representative of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Can Tho City, to develop pangasius breeds, it is necessary to first strengthen strict management of the breed production stage.
"Continue to advise the City People's Committee to issue policies to support research and development programs and seed production to serve the restructuring of the agricultural sector of Can Tho city in the period 2021 - 2030.
Coordinate the implementation of the Project "Building Can Tho Aquaculture Development Center associated with the aquaculture area of the Mekong Delta".
"Calling for investment, attracting business capital, forming modern concentrated pangasius breeding and breeding areas" - a representative of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Can Tho City emphasized.
In addition, a representative of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of An Giang province said that it is necessary to strengthen inspection, assessment, certification and inspection of maintenance of conditions for aquatic breeding and production facilities according to the provisions of the Law on Fisheries.
At the same time, effectively implement Decree 37/2024/ND-CP dated April 4, 2024 amending and supplementing a number of articles of Decree 26/2019/ND-CP dated March 8, 2019 detailing a number of articles and measures to implement the Law on Fisheries.
In particular, strengthen inspection of production and breeding facilities in the province to raise awareness of facilities to comply with legal regulations.
