SEA Games 33 jumping champion and goal of exceeding the mark

Hoài Việt |

SEA Games 33 female high jump champion Bui Thi Kim Anh continues to practice professionally right from the beginning of the new year 2026.

She believes that she will try harder to maintain the achievements she has achieved as well as find opportunities to surpass herself.

Returning after the glory of SEA Games 33

The first training session of the new year 2026 at the National High-Level Athlete Training Center (Hanoi) returned with the athletes in the high jump event. Bui Thi Kim Anh continued her warm-up exercises and entered professional training in the familiar area for high jumps at the athletics field.

Recalling the moment of surpassing the 1m86 mark to win the SEA Games 33 Gold Medal, the female athlete shared excitedly: "That time was definitely an unforgettable moment for me. I surpassed a very valuable mark and won the Gold Medal for the first time.

Before competing in Thailand, I did not have good results, so I only aimed to try to win a SEA Games 33 medal. Unexpectedly, I achieved such a good level. This is my best result ever. Before that, I had never surpassed the level of 1m86".

Time has passed quickly. Half a month ago, Bui Thi Kim Anh was living in happiness after winning the championship at SEA Games 33. After half a month, she shared that now is the time to return to professionalism and temporarily put aside the wishes for victory.

The competition glory is always a beautiful memory to keep, but in reality, she really wants to maintain her professional results on the court in 2026. When asked Kim Anh, what helped her overcome such a challenging 1m86 mark, because before that she had never achieved the above result.

The female athlete frankly expressed: "I'm not very clear either. But one of the things that helped me achieve the results is focusing my best on the momentum and jumping. In addition, my coach always adjusts every technique very carefully, so I drew the best points for myself to perform. Of course, a little luck helped me succeed at SEA Games 33".

Returning from Thailand, Kim Anh received many congratulations from experts and she shared that the greatest joy is that her family always welcomes a large number of neighbors to celebrate and encourage. “I am lucky to be supported by my family to practice sports. The SEA Games 33 Gold Medal is a valuable gift I send to my family. The whole family also encouraged me that when you have achieved SEA Games results, now try to achieve even better results,” the female athlete expressed.

Focus on breaking records

Right after competing at SEA Games 33, Bui Thi Kim Anh once revealed that one of her goals in the following years is to find opportunities to break the high jump record at the Southeast Asian Games. However, this is not a small challenge.

The 1m86 result achieved by Bui Thi Kim Anh at SEA Games 33 officially surpassed the national youth record for women's high jump in 2025. Last year, teammate Duong Thi Thao of Bui Thi Kim Anh set a national youth record with a result of 1m85. However, Kim Anh did better than that by conquering 1m86.

Before participating in SEA Games 33, Kim Anh had never surpassed the 1m80 mark in official competitions. Even, she only reached 1m77 at the 2025 National Athletics Championships. However, professionals such as coach Vu Thi My Hanh place a lot of faith in Kim Anh because she predicts her student's ability to achieve good results.

Assessing Kim Anh on the court at the 2025 National Athletics Championships, coach Vu Thi My Hanh once shared: "This is one of the promising young athletes. This year, Kim Anh is only 19 years old, so professional development opportunities are still very wide open.

Directly directing her students to compete at SEA Games 33, coach Vu Thi My Hanh smiled after this female athlete finished her last jump with a result of 1m86 and brought the Gold Medal to the Vietnamese Athletics Team.

After many years, Vietnamese women's high jump has continued to have someone surpass the 1m85 mark at the SEA Games. I understand that Kim Anh competed with the best spirit and when there was no pressure, she succeeded," coach Vu Thi My Hanh shared in Thailand.

The SEA Games record for women's high jump is currently 1m94. This level is also the national record of Vietnamese athletics (a achievement set by athlete Bui Thi Nhung in 2005). In the past 20 years, Vietnamese athletics has not witnessed any athlete reach the female high jump record threshold. The athlete who had the best results close to the national record was athlete Duong Thi Viet Anh. She once achieved 1m90 and won a Gold Medal at the 2011 SEA Games.

In her sharing, Bui Thi Kim Anh shows confidence and desire to conquer achievements. In addition, Kim Anh sets herself the task of striving to win the number one position in women's high jump at the 2026 National Athletics Championships. No one can predict the future. If Bui Thi Kim Anh is in the best professional preparation and maintains stability, the ability to surpass national records is completely promising.

Opportunity to conquer the 2025 Victory Cup

Right at the beginning of 2026, Bui Thi Kim Anh received good news when she was nominated by the Organizing Committee of the 2025 Victory Cup Award into the voting list of the category of Typical Young Athlete of the Year.

Receiving this information, the female athlete expressed: "I was surprised to know that I was nominated. Young athletes of Vietnamese sports have had a very successful competition year. I am happy to be nominated on the list. Being nominated also helps me feel more proud.

Kim Anh was born and raised in Nam Dinh (old). This place is considered one of the localities that has strongly developed school sports. Kim Anh got acquainted with athletics also from that development direction. The female athlete said that she competed in many school running tournaments at the high school level when she was young.

Therefore, her love for athletics grew and when she was selected to become a professional athlete, she decided to pursue the women's high jump event. In previous victory cup award announcements, many young faces had the opportunity to be honored. Bui Thi Kim Anh (19 years old) is one of the most typical representatives of the young generation with professional qualifications, achievements and aspirations to conquer the challenges that Vietnamese sports possess.

However, the female athlete humbly affirmed that she only aims to maximize professional training because the results on the court are the practical value assessing herself. “Surely now I will have more pressure in training and competition because I have achieved the SEA Games 33 Gold Medal result recently.

However, pressure will also be a motivation for me to focus more to overcome good results, bringing more medals to Vietnamese athletics. 2026 has begun, I and the coach have also carried out a thorough training program and achieved the competition result, which is my own victory cup!", Bui Thi Kim Anh confided.
