Sunny days passing through workers' dormitories

Linh Nguyên |

Having gone through the first hot days of this summer, Ms. Quach Thi Nham - working in Thach That Industrial Park, renting in Ngoc Than village, Ngoc My commune, Quoc Oai district (Hanoi) and many workers in the boarding houses just wish that the hot days would not return.

In the first few days of the month, electricity bills have increased due to high use

Ms. Nham is from Hoa Binh. Due to conditions, her husband lives in Hoa Binh with a 7-year-old daughter, she lives in Hanoi with her mother-in-law and her 9-month-old son. She rented a room of about 12 square meters, with closed walls and no windows.

The room only cushioned for the mother and child to sleep, a hammock, 1 clothes hanger. How much in the winter room is hot in the summer. During the day, even when it was cool, her mother -in -law also had to carry her grandson on the road to avoid stuffy in the inn.

The couple saved up and bought a air conditioner installed in the rented room since she was pregnant with her second child. When she gave birth, the couple took off the air conditioners and brought them back to their hometown in Hoa Binh to use, intending to bring them back to Hanoi later. Going to work after the maternity leave, they have to take a break and not bring the air conditioners down because... it is costly to lose a sum of money.

During the heat in early May, Ms. Nham's family turned on the fan all day and night without being able to repel the heat. Many times I sit in front of a fan but still sweat because the fan blows out the heat in the room on me. Ms. Nham's mother-in-law said that her 9-month-old grandchild was floating all over the place, and was even more upset so he kept crying.

When I get to the road, there is a little wind but it is dusty, and there are many vehicles passing by. As for Ms. Nham, when she comes home from work, she plays with her children a little, trying to wait until 6pm, when the air is calm, she goes to the kitchen to cook. But it was a messy sweat in just 5 minutes. That is why at the first weekend of May, she told her husband to install air conditioners.

Cong installed 350,000 VND. Since the air conditioners were installed again, in the spirit of saving, only every hot day, the grandmother at home turn on the alarm. Then there was a cold wind in mid-May, so the air conditioner was "rested".

But the record heat wave on the past 1 - 3.6, the air conditioner "ran" from 10am. At the beginning of the summer vacation, Nham and her husband gave her first daughter to Hanoi to play with her and her mother. It was so well but because the sun was so sunny, the three grandchildren turned on the air conditioner, staying indoors all day. Want to go to the toilet is also afraid to open the door of the motel room, walk out before going to the toilet.

Ms. Nham calculated that last month, it was only hot for a few days, using a fan without a fan, but the electricity bill was out of 150,000 VND; this month, using air conditioners to increase the electricity bill several times. "I know but I still have to turn on the air conditioner, otherwise it would be your fault and the children's, how can you stand the heat" - Ms. Nham shared.

Ms. Nham also hopes that the heat will not return, parents at work still have fans and air conditioners at the company, but the grandparents and children at home are both nervous and hot, and when going out are hot and dangerous because vehicles travel, the boarding house does not have space for children to play, one step is to go out.

Renting a house but haven't seen each other for 3 days

Normally, even though they work on opposite shifts, workers in the same boarding house near Quang Minh Industrial Park almost every day meet each other, sometimes telling three fairy tales, sometimes asking for a salary, sometimes giving each other a few dishes.

But in the first days of June, with a few hot days, those who come home from work quickly enter the house and close the door. No one here has the conditions to install air conditioners, so the only heat-resistant device is an electric fan.

Mr. Tran Van Minh - an assembly worker for a business in Quang Minh Industrial Park confided: The place is Hau Loc, Thanh Hoa, near the sea, so the sunny day is less hot at night. But Hanoi is different, hot from morning to night, from night to morning.

Minh has just been to Hanoi as a worker for more than a year. Last hot day, Mr. Minh went online to see how to prevent heat and follow. He went to the market to buy 1/4 stone tree, put in pots in front of the fan. The fan blowing the cool air from the stone is also somewhat helped but only 2-3 hours is the melting stone, the meager a little cool does not resist the heat like the 4 walls of the house all day ...

At the meeting and dialogue conference of Mr. Tran Sy Thanh - Member of the Party Central Committee, Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee with workers in the capital in mid-May 2025, information from the Hanoi City Labor Federation said that regarding housing for workers, the city currently has 3 industrial parks including: Thach That - Quoc Oai, Thang Long (Dong Anh district), Phu Nghia (Chuong My district) with housing projects that meet nearly 20% of the housing needs of workers.

The remaining industrial parks do not have housing for workers. Therefore, about 80% of workers are renting houses in residential areas. In particular, some rental areas are cramped, security, order and environmental sanitation are not guaranteed, rental prices and electricity and water bills are high...
