At the meeting and working session with the National Assembly Delegation of Can Tho City on March 17 on "Implementation of policies and laws on environmental protection since the Law on Environmental Protection (BVMT) 2020 took effect", the People's Committee of Can Tho City pointed out the efforts, results and limitations that need to be overcome in this work.

According to the People's Committee of Can Tho City, in general, after the Law on Environmental Protection 2020 was issued and took effect, the implementation of the Law on Environmental Protection has been proactively planned by localities and actively implemented synchronously at all levels, sectors and localities across the city. The effectiveness and efficiency of state management of the hospital and health insurance continue to be improved.
However, the City People's Committee also frankly pointed out the remaining difficulties and challenges. Although the budget for environmental protection has been allocated, not less than 1% of the local budget is allocated annually, it has not yet met practical requirements.

The team of cadres working in environmental management has not met the work needs, most of them have to concurrently work in many other jobs. The participation and coordination of local sectors and authorities in proactively mobilizing international aid and sponsorship capital to invest in environmental protection and socializing environmental protection has not achieved expected results.
The city has not yet thoroughly handled the previously remaining landfills (landfills in Co Do district, O Mon district, Thot Not district). Environmental monitoring and monitoring infrastructure has not met actual requirements; has not promptly monitored the discharge of wastewater exceeding standards in some production and business establishments. The industrial park has been put into operation but has not yet completed the construction of a centralized wastewater treatment system.

Regarding waste management, the city is slow to issue guiding regulations on classification and treatment of domestic solid waste compared to expected; slow to issue prices for domestic solid waste collection, transportation and treatment compared to regulations; There are no specific solutions and plans to implement the classification of domestic solid waste at source in 2025...
The rate of urban wastewater collection and treatment is still low. The current status of canals and ditches in Ninh Kieu, Binh Thuy and Cai Rang districts shows signs of pollution, silting, encroachment, and erosion, affecting the environment and the quality of life of the people.
From 2016 to 2024, the city's Environmental Crime Prevention Police force discovered and inspected a total of 1,384 cases, of which 513 cases violated environmental laws, 151 cases on resources, and 720 cases on food hygiene and safety. A total of 946 administrative violations have been sanctioned, with a total amount of more than 17.861 billion VND. During the period, 5 cases and 5 defendants were prosecuted.
The City People's Committee has approved the City Drainage Plan to 2030, with a vision to 2050. Accordingly, the total amount of domestic wastewater is forecasted to be 155,500 m3/day and night by 2025; it is expected to build 10 new factories and upgrade 1 factory. The estimated investment cost for wastewater collection and treatment projects is very large, estimated at about VND 5,436 billion in 2025 and estimated at VND 5,143 billion by 2030.
