ANH TUẤN |

Hanoi - On the morning of June 20, the Hanoi People's Committee organized a "Launching ceremony for the operation of modern environmental sanitation equipment and vehicles in 4 inner-city districts".

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Tran Sy Thanh said that Hanoi is gradually realizing its commitment to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions to "0" by 2050 in the spirit of the COP26 Conference. Over the years, the city has always paid special attention to improving the quality of environmental sanitation.

Currently, the city has put into operation two large-scale waste-to-energy plants, Thien Y (Soc Son district) and Seraphin (Son Tay town), with a total capacity of more than 6,200 tons/day, generating 120MW of electricity, basically meeting the needs of daily waste treatment. In addition, the whole city has 6 wastewater treatment plants, with the rate of treated domestic wastewater reaching about 30.9%; when Yen Xa Wastewater Treatment Plant is completed in 2025, this rate will increase to about 50%.

Regarding the air environment, Hanoi currently has 10 industrial parks, 318 craft villages, about 1.2 million cars and 7 million motorbikes (of which, more than 70% have been used for over 10 years) circulating every day - which are the main sources of pollution, in addition to the construction and burning of agricultural by-products.

In order to improve environmental quality, the city has implemented many synchronous measures such as increasing tree planting; expanding monitoring networks; applying modern technology in monitoring and handling air pollution; identifying low-emission zones; converting vehicles to electricity, green energy; stopping the use of beehive coal stoves; strictly handling the act of burning straw...

"The application of modern science and technology in environmental sanitation is the top priority of the city. As today, Hanoi put into operation 100 vehicles and equipment (meeting Euro 6 emission standards or using electricity), not only improving labor efficiency but also contributing to reducing environmental pollution, said Chairman Tran Sy Thanh.

Mr. Tran Sy Thanh said that today's event not only marked a shift in equipment and technology but also demonstrated a comprehensive change in the thinking and management methods of environmental sanitation in the city. This is a practical action to fulfill the commitment to the people, gradually building Hanoi into a bright - green - clean - beautiful, livable city.

The Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee acknowledged and highly appreciated the active and serious preparation of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, Hanoi Urban Environment Company Limited (Urenco), leaders and people of Hai Ba Trung, Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, Dong Da districts, and Thien Y Hanoi Environmental Energy Joint Stock Company for contributing to the success of the launch event.

At the ceremony, the Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee called on all cadres and employees of the environmental sanitation sector to promote a sense of responsibility, master equipment, and operate safely and effectively. At the same time, he requested that authorities at all levels, organizations and people continue to accompany, monitor and spread awareness of preserving and protecting the living environment.

Also within the framework of the launching ceremony, the Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee assigned the Department of Agriculture and Environment to regularly monitor the implementation process, after 1 year of summarizing and evaluating the effectiveness, as a basis for advising the Hanoi People's Committee to decide to replicate the model throughout the area by 2026.

The city is committed to continuing to accompany, support, invest and create the best conditions for environmental sanitation to become more and more effective, contributing significantly to the development of modern and sustainable urban areas, Chairman Tran Sy Thanh emphasized.

The Department will continue to advise on policies to encourage technological innovation, gradually Mechanize, move towards automation and digitalization of urban environmental management; at the same time, strengthen inspection, supervision, and promptly adjust shortcomings in practice.
