On the morning of December 17, Binh Thuan Irrigation Company said that the unit will close the overflow of Song Quao reservoir to regulate water resources, ensure safety of works and serve production and daily life in the downstream area.
According to the management unit, by 2:00 p.m. on December 16, the water level of Song Quao Lake was at an elevation of +89.97m, 0.20m lower than the normal water level. The current useful capacity reaches more than 74.34 million m3, equivalent to 98.4% of the designed capacity, while the amount of water flowing into the lake ranges from 1012 m3/s.
Based on hydrological monitoring data on the reservoir basin and water supply needs in 2026, Binh Thuan Irrigation Company agreed to close the overflow of Song Quao Lake at 6:00 a.m. on December 17.
After the overflow is closed, the water level of Song Quao Lake is expected to continue to rise and may exceed the free overflow threshold at the elevation of +90.17m for about 1 to 3 days, depending on the water flow to the lake.
Binh Thuan Irrigation Company has requested the People's Committees of communes and wards including Ham Thuan Bac, Ham Thuan, Ham Liem, Ham Thang and Phu Thuy to promptly notify people in the downstream area; at the same time, proactively deploy plans to prevent and combat natural disasters, ensuring safety in case of heavy rain and overflow.
