On December 29, thousands of university students in Hanoi gathered at Hanoi University of Science and Technology to participate in the 17th Red Sunday launching ceremony - 2025.
Red Sunday with the message: "Donate blood to save lives - your life and mine" is a blood donation event organized by Tien Phong Newspaper in coordination with the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion and other units.
Speaking at the program, journalist Phung Cong Suong - Editor-in-Chief of Tien Phong Newspaper, Head of the Organizing Committee of the 17th Red Sunday - 2025, emphasized: “In the cold air of winter, Red Sunday continues to affirm that the cold cannot stop the warm blood of humanity. The arms raised high, the warm smiles... all combine to create a meaningful Red Sunday. The spirit of volunteerism and kindness has penetrated deep into each of our hearts and is constantly spreading, it is also a spiritual blood of volunteerism that nourishes the soul of each of us”.
Over the past 16 years, the Red Sunday program has attracted the participation and support of millions of volunteer hearts, contributing hundreds of thousands of blood units to the health sector. These are not only impressive numbers but also touching stories about sharing, humanity, and kindness in the community.
If in 2009, the first year Red Sunday was only held in Hanoi and received 96 units of blood, then in the past 5 years, each year Red Sunday has been held in over 50 provinces and cities across the country and received over 50 thousand units of blood.
Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan said that currently, the demand for blood transfusion is increasing due to the increasing demand for medical care. The health sector is applying modern medical techniques such as organ transplantation, stem cell transplantation, and emergency treatment for tens of thousands of traffic accident and work accident victims each year. Therefore, ensuring enough blood for emergency and treatment needs is always a huge pressure for the health sector.
"Blood donation events like Red Sunday have contributed to ensuring blood supply for patient treatment before and after Tet, contributing to bringing life, faith and hope to tens of thousands of patients and their families," emphasized Prof. Dr. Tran Van Thuan.
Present early, 100 students of the People's Police Academy registered to donate blood, many of whom had donated blood more than 10 times, some of whom had donated blood 2-3 times.
Captain Trieu Duy Hoang, working at the Mobile Police Department of Tuyen Quang Provincial Police, currently studying at the People's Police Academy, shared that this was the second time he donated blood in 2024. He could not remember how many times he had donated blood, on average he donated blood twice a year.
Accompanying him was his colleague who works in the same unit and studies at the People's Police Academy - Captain Nguyen Bao Trung. "This is my 6th blood donation and the first time I've donated blood since enrolling at the People's Police Academy," Captain Trung shared.
