Admire the unique shaped 600 year old longan tree in Hai Phong

    Standing out in the national relic site of Gam Temple (Tien Lang, Hai Phong) is a longan tree over 600 years old, recognized as a heritage tree since 2017.

    Gam Temple (Tan Minh Commune, Tien Lang District, Hai Phong) was built during the reign of King Ly Cao Tong to commemorate the merits of the famous general Ngo Ly Tin. The temple is over 8 centuries old. Behind the temple is an ancient longan garden, including a longan tree over 600 years old, recognized as a Vietnamese Heritage Tree since 2017.

    Mr. Dang Van Trinh (70 years old, keeper of Gam Temple) said that the longan tree is now over 600 years old. Legend has it that after building Gam Temple, the people of Hung Yen, the hometown of Grand Tutor Ngo Ly Tin, brought the local specialty longan tree to plant in the garden behind the palace.

    From the base up, the tree trunk is nearly 1 meter in diameter, rough and lumpy after more than 6 centuries of existence.

    About 4 meters from the base of the tree, 3 large branches spread out, winding like dragons. From the large branches, dozens of small branches are divided, spreading out about 100 meters in the garden.

    In September 2024, due to the impact of Typhoon Yagi, 2 out of 3 large branches of the heritage longan tree were broken. After the storm, the Management Board of Gam Temple relic sawed off the broken branches and applied healing medicine to the tree. Up to now, new shoots have begun to grow from the broken branches, demonstrating the strong vitality of the "old longan".

    In addition to the heritage longan tree, behind Gam Temple is an ancient longan garden with dozens of longan trees that are hundreds of years old. The longan garden is green all year round, and in the summer, the longan flowers and bears sweet fruit.

    In the Gam Temple grounds, there is still a banyan tree on the right side of the temple that is about 300 years old. Generations of Cam Khe villagers are proud of the national relic of Gam Temple as well as the system of ancient trees in the temple grounds, taking turns to care for the trees to stay green all year round.
