Rice fields in Lao Cai "petrified" after storm and flood

Along the stream of Trinh Tuong commune, Bat Xat district (Lao Cai), the rice fields are now completely covered by white rocks.
According to the reporter of Lao Dong Newspaper in early November, along the villages of Pho Moi 1,2 to Phan Ho village, Trinh Tuong commune, Bat Xat district, Lao Cai province, it is easy to immediately recognize the difference when the entire stream bank is covered with only rocks. It is known that after the historic flood caused by storm No. 3 in early September, the rushing water swept hundreds of thousands of large and small stones down the stream of Trinh Tuong commune. Before the flood, people harvested rice in Trinh Tuong commune to limit damage. However, many areas of rice fields were eroded and covered with rocks, making it difficult to restore them for cultivation.Nearly two months after the storm and flood passed, the stream was left in a mess of rocks. The fields of the people along the stream were devastated by landslides and it was very difficult to cultivate again due to lack of land and scarce water resources. Many large trees were also swept away by the water from other places.Ruined houses, damaged transport infrastructure and rice fields turned into "stone fields" are the current scene in Trinh Tuong.Mr. Mo Van Sinh (Pho Moi 1 village, Trinh Tuong commune) said: “Just 2-3 months ago, this entire area was still green rice fields. But just one storm and flood, almost all the fields next to a small stream were flattened. Now this area is not called a rice field but a rocky field, unable to grow crops.”The remaining fields of the people cannot be cultivated because the streams have dried up, the land is dry and cracks have appeared, leading to the risk of further landslides. Many trees died after 2 months of historic storms and floods. In some rare stream banks that are not covered with rocks, people take advantage of the opportunity to reclaim the land to continue farming and planting again after the natural disaster.Walking along the stream from the center of Trinh Tuong commune to San Ho village, with a length of about 5km, looking far away, you can observe the surrounding large area mostly covered with large and small rocks, estimated at about 3 million cubic meters. With no more land to cultivate, people went to collect dry firewood that had been swept away by the water from the stream banks and fields.Talking to Lao Dong, Vice Chairman of Trinh Tuong Commune People's Committee Pham Van Hung said: "The locality has made a proposal to higher levels, the district is also asking for the province's opinion to consider collecting rocks on the surface of the stream. Recently, Vice Chairman of Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee Hoang Quoc Khanh also came down to survey the actual situation. For households that have lost their fields, we are making procedures and sending them to higher levels to have support plans so that people can soon stabilize their lives."
According to preliminary statistics, the total area of buried rocks in Trinh Tuong is estimated to be about 150 hectares, of which nearly 60 hectares are rice fields. There are places where the buried rocks are 6-7 meters high from the stream surface, even exceeding the roadbed. Currently, the Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee is planning to support people with rice fields that cannot be restored.
