Lessons from the case of prosecuting online sellers with sales of VND72 billion and tax evasion of more than VND1 billion

Lê Thanh Phong |

After paying more than 1 billion VND in taxes for online sales, a woman in Vung Tau was prosecuted.

On June 16, the Investigation Police Agency of Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province Police initiated a case and prosecuted Tran Thi Le Thu (born in 1985, residing in Vung Tau City) to investigate tax evasion.

The authorities determined that the transaction fee included payment of Ms. Thu's purchase price from January 2020 to May 18, 2025 up to more than 72 billion VND. However, Ms. Thu did not register and did not declare taxes.

Many people do business online but do not declare taxes, this is a huge tax loss. This loss of revenue is due to lax management, people find online business too easy, profitable but do not lose any tax money, so they just compete to do business.

Not declaring taxes and doing business, but not being handled, many people disregard the law. Gradually, they feel that there is nothing to worry about, because no one knows what their business is like, leading to non-compliance with regulations related to business activities.

From the prosecution of defendant Tran Thi Le Thu, there will certainly be an impact on online traders who evade taxes. If we do not proactively rectify and overcome the consequences, we will one day be handled according to the law.

Local authorities need to find similar violations and handle them according to the law to include online business activities in the legal framework.

Not only for those who do business online, but for all other business households, they must comply with regulations, including tax obligations.

To pay taxes correctly and sufficiently, there must be transparency in business books, goods must have origin, documents, import and export invoices.

Illegal goods, scams, and counterfeit goods are illegal, tax evasion, and illegal profits. Through information about stores closing and not doing business, traders stopping trading, it can be seen that among these, there are many cases of trading in counterfeit, counterfeit, and goods of unknown origin.

Therefore, it is necessary to completely crack down on smuggled, counterfeit, and fake goods to protect consumers and build a healthy market. It is better for few people to do business but the environment is healthy, the water is beneficial to the people, and there are more households doing business but the water is harmful to the people.

In addition to consumer protection, business rectification, and tax loss, it also creates fairness for other components in tax payment.

Most people comply with tax even though their income is not high, while there are many people who do business with profits but evade taxes. It is unfair.
