According to Lao Dong reporters, on many streets in Hanoi... there are many locations with degraded sidewalks and cracks. Or, there are roads that are being dug up and paved with stone.
People do not know why the newly paved stones have been dug up and broken.
For example, Nguyen Thanh Binh Street (Ha Dong Ward) was paved with new sidewalks in 2024, now broken and cracked.
Many sidewalks in Hanoi were dug up and replaced with new stones, but then they were damaged and dug up again. People are upset, the press reports, but this situation continues, from one route to another.
Many sidewalks in Hanoi are paved with natural stone with a durability of 50 - 70 years but have deteriorated and sunk after a few years of use.
Up to now, many more sidewalks have been damaged, paved with broken stone, and have to be replaced.
Hanoi has invested hundreds of billions of VND in this project, but every time they dig up and down, the money is spent on broken rocks, which is extremely wasteful.
Why is the paving stones on the sidewalk broken after only a few years of use?
Is it due to poor stone quality, not as advertised as having good durability, some types last up to 50 - 70 years?
Is it due to poor construction quality and reckless construction, so the sidewalk that has not been used for many years has degraded and broken gravel?
These causes need to be verified and clarified.
But there is a certain reason, people still see it every day, which is people who lack awareness and ride motorbikes on the sidewalk; those are illegal car parking lots on the sidewalk right in front of management agencies but are not handled, so sidewalks sink and are quickly broken by gravel, which is natural.
In addition, it is also possible that the infrastructure items are not synchronous, causing digging up and down to construct the underground items.
Some units said that flooding caused the sidewalks to break down quickly. However, clearly, if the construction is on standard, the sidewalk is reinforced and drained well, flooding cannot be the main cause.
Blaming natural disasters to cover up weaknesses in construction and management is unacceptable.
To change this situation, first of all, people must be fully supervised from the authorities' public disclosure of the list of construction units, supervision and acceptance of each sidewalk route; Second, tie the responsibility for warranty, strictly handle the unit that made the mistake; Third, manage synchronous infrastructure and have a long-term vision, coordinate construction to avoid overlapping excavation; Fourth, strengthen urban order management - end the act of cars and motorbikes "swearing" sidewalks.
Each paving stone has budget money and taxation from the people. If we have to replace it every few years, the loss and waste is huge.
This situation must be stopped, otherwise, how much money can we pay for it!
