After the 13-month-old child died while being transferred from Tay Ninh General Hospital to Ho Chi Minh City, the hospital's Board of Directors held an official meeting and admitted errors in the treatment process.
According to Dr. Phan Thanh Tam - Director of Tay Ninh General Hospital, patient N.V.B. was admitted to the hospital on the evening of August 9, and on August 12, the child's condition became serious, respiratory failure, and acute atherosclerosis.
The doctor prescribed Adrenalin via a hospital infusion. However, during the implementation, the two nurses used the injection line incorrectly.
Doctor Phan Thanh Tam affirmed: "This was a mistake in the treatment process, but it was not an incorrect vaccination as reported on social networks".
However, with one death due to a mistake in treatment, it is impossible to just discipline 2 nurses and end the story.
On August 18, the Deputy Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management (Ministry of Health) signed a document to the Tay Ninh Department of Health requesting to handle this serious medical incident.
The Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management requires Tay Ninh General Hospital to be responsible for implementing the process according to the provisions of the Law on Medical Examination and Treatment to draw conclusions on whether or not there are technical errors, as a basis for resolving disputes if they arise.
In addition, a professional council must be urgently established to review the entire technical process and care process applied to pediatric patients, especially in the stage of diagnosing, identifying and prescribing the treatment of adrenalin gasoline according to the Guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of some common diseases in children issued by the Ministry of Health in Decision No. 3312/QD-BYT dated August 7, 2015.
We strongly support the strong direction of the Ministry of Health, a medical emergency cannot be handled through a loudspeaker by disciplining staff, and apologizing to the victim's family must be terminated, but the treatment process must be clarified, to ensure legality, and go hand in hand with the responsibility of the doctor and the hospital.
In fact, not all patients coming to the hospital are treated well or the doctor saves their lives, but a serious medical incident is another story.
For example, the doctor prescribed Adrenalin via a dung spray, but the two nurses used the injection line incorrectly.
So, do doctors prescribe orally or medically, why do both nurses misunderstand?
It is necessary to clarify the treatment process, where and at what stage there were errors, to handle responsibilities, and at the same time learn from experience to avoid similar cases of medical complications.
