Handling traffic jams and flooding - a must-visit to be a livable city

Lê Thanh Phong |

Ho Chi Minh City aims to become a livable place, where people are guaranteed education, healthcare, environment, safety and development opportunities, no one is left behind.

That is the opinion of Ho Chi Minh City Party Secretary Tran Luu Quang at the Workshop "orientation for educational research and ensuring and protecting human rights in the new era of the nation" held on November 17 jointly organized by the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics in coordination with the Ministry of Public Security and the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee.

In the health sector, Ho Chi Minh City is a locality that invests and develops facilities quite quickly. Public and private health facilities meet the increasing demand for medical examination and treatment of the people.

Not only local people, but more and more overseas Vietnamese and Vietnamese patients from many countries are coming to Ho Chi Minh City for treatment.

In the field of education, Ho Chi Minh City is the leading center for education and training in the country. Many high schools and secondary schools in Ho Chi Minh City have spacious facilities. The city also creates conditions for non-public schools and international schools to develop.

However, there are other shortcomings that need to be completely resolved so that Ho Chi Minh City is truly a livable place.

That is, the situation of traffic jams and flooding has lasted for many years, and has become increasingly serious, but there have been no signs of improvement.

At the 1st Congress of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, term 2025 - 2030, held on October 14, Mr. Nguyen Van Duoc - Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee said that he had met with central leaders and promised the Prime Minister to be determined to solve the problem of traffic jams and flooding by 2035.

People hope that the Chairman will fulfill his commitment.

A very good news is that Metro Line 2 (Ben Thanh - Tham Luong) will start construction on January 15, 2026, applying many specific mechanisms to speed up progress, expected to be completed in 2030.

In addition, Ho Chi Minh City has also proposed an ambitious plan, which is to complete 355km of metro in the next 10 years.

Hopefully, metro projects will be completed on time.

Regarding the flooding situation, in the immediate future, people are looking forward to the 10,000 billion VND tidal prevention project being completed and put into operation soon.

This flood prevention project has been more than 90% complete, but has been suspended since November 2020. The project items have been exposed to the sky for the past 5 years, a huge waste.

More wasteful is that people often suffer from flooding, the damage to the whole society cannot be fully calculated.

On October 18, at the conference to summarize 50 years of literature and art in Ho Chi Minh City, Secretary Tran Luu Quang said that the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee decided to stop the housing project in the Nha Rong Wharf area to expand the Ho Chi Minh Cultural Space and park.

Ho Chi Minh City residents agreed to support this decision.

However, the most urgent and urgent thing is to solve the problem of traffic jams and flooding.

The people look forward to it every day.
