Explaining many people's confusion about Tran Nhat Duat and Long Bien bridges

Chánh Tiến |

Hanoi - Many people think that Tran Nhat Duat Bridge and Long Bien Bridge are one, but in reality they are not.

On October 29, the Hanoi Department of Construction issued Notice No. 1262/TB-SXD on adjusting traffic organization on Long Bien Bridge and Tran Nhat Duat Street to serve the construction of the periodic repair project of Tran Nhat Duat Bridge (Hanoi - Dong Dang railway line).

The implementation period is from 0:00 on November 1 to December 31, 2025.

From this traffic diversion notice, many people learned that there was a bridge named Tran Nhat Duat, but still mistakenly thought this was another name for Long Bien Bridge.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Phuong (residing in lane 66, Ngoc Lam street, Bo De ward, Hanoi), when she heard the announcement about traffic adjustment on Long Bien bridge to repair Tran Nhat Duat bridge, she thought "the bridge must have a new name or this name has been since it was built", not thinking that they were two completely different bridges.

Mr. Pham Thanh Long (residing in lane 131 Hong Ha street, Hoan Kiem ward, Hanoi) also said: The bridge over Tran Nhat Duat street below has little attention from the people, often collectively calling it Long Bien bridge but very few people call it separately.

According to the reporter of Lao Dong Newspaper, Tran Nhat Duat Bridge and Long Bien Bridge have been in use since 1902, with two separate bridge abutments but located close together, connecting from Long Bien Station.

The two bridges are connected by rail and road, so many people mistakenly think this is just a bridge.

Speaking to Lao Dong Newspaper reporter, Mr. Ngo Manh Hung - Head of the safety and construction of the Tran Nhat Duat bridge repair project said that the Tran Nhat Duat and Long Bien bridges were both built at the same time.

Tran Nhat Duat Bridge was put into operation in 1902, serving trains on a 1,000mm gauge railway, with a global length of 37.52m. The railway width is 4.45m and the road for rudimentary vehicles is 3.5m wide.

After more than 120 years of exploitation, the bridge has degraded and rotted; occasional collisions occurred due to vehicles exceeding the height of traffic below.

To ensure safety, the railway industry must carry out periodic repairs: the bridge for ships is reinforced, while the road section from the Bo De to the inner city is completely renovated.

Mr. Hung added that the construction of Tran Nhat Duat Bridge is facing many difficulties because it must simultaneously ensure train safety, while the traffic volume below is large, near the bus shuttle station.

The unit must both ensure labor safety and meet the schedule set before December 31, 2025, provided that most items can only be constructed at night.
