Not just a morning drink
Coffee has long been considered the energy level to start the new day. But according to nutritionist Morgan Pearson ( Boston Clinical Nutrition Center, USA), choosing the right ingredients and way of brewing can help coffee become a healthy part of your daily diet.
Coffee is rich in natural antioxidants, which help reduce inflammation and protect the heart. However, adding sugar, ice cream or syrup can lose that benefit," said Ms. Pearson.
7 ways to drink healthier coffee every day
Drink pure black coffee: Black coffee without added sugar, milk or ice cream is the best choice. This drink contains chlorogenic acid, a compound that helps control blood sugar and reduce oxidative stress.
Sprinkle with cinnamon or cardamom: These two spices not only enhance flavor but also support digestion and balance blood sugar. Research shows that cinnamon can reduce inflammation slightly if used regularly.
Use vanilla or almond extract instead of sugar: A few drops of natural vanilla helps create a sweet feeling without adding calories. Pearson recommends avoiding industrial flavored syrups that are high in sugar and additives.
Add a spoonful of cocoa powder: unsweetened cocoa helps increase antioxidant activity and improve mood. A healthy mocha can be made with black coffee, cocoa powder and a little cinnamon.
Add protein or collagen powder: According to Ms. Pearson, adding 1 tablespoon of protein or collagen powder to coffee helps the body stay full longer and supports skin and joint health. This is a trend favored by many athletes.
Eat skim milk or unsweetened plant milks: If you like it fatty, you can eat skim milk or unsweetened oat milk. Avoid thick ice cream or sugar-fortified milk because it is high in saturated fat.
Try mixing with ginger or chili: A little ground ginger or paprika not only creates a new flavor but also helps stimulate digestion, boost metabolism and blood circulation, according to Pearson.
Drinking 1 - 2 cups of coffee a day is considered a reasonable level. The important thing is not how much you drink, but what you put into that cup of coffee, said Ms. Pearson. If consumed properly, coffee not only helps keep you alert but is also a source of nutrients that protect your heart and health.
