Stroke comes suddenly
Many people think that stroke only occurs in the elderly, but in fact, stroke also occurs in children. Currently, the rate of young people with the disease accounts for about 10% of stroke cases and this number is increasing.
Associate Professor, Dr. Mai Duy Ton - Director of the Stroke Center, Bach Mai Hospital - said: The Center has treated many young stroke patients, including children under 15 years old. For example, a 9-year-old patient suddenly became weak and numb on the left side of his body while he was at school and was taken to the provincial hospital for emergency treatment. The CT scan results did not detect any damage, but the MRI results detected a cerebral infarction.
In another case, a 12-year-old girl in Phu Tho province was brought to the hospital late, after 12 hours because of unclear symptoms. The patient suddenly had blurred vision and was admitted to the Center, where she was diagnosed with an arteriovenous fistula.
According to Associate Professor Ton, among the stroke patients hospitalized, about 10% are young people (under 45 years old), due to cerebral hemorrhage or cerebral vascular occlusion. In this group of patients, most young people subjectively do not think of stroke but think of other diseases, so it is easy to ignore the early stages of the disease.
The Emergency Department of E Hospital has just received and provided timely emergency care to a male patient (48 years old, from Hanoi) who was hospitalized due to a traffic accident, but when providing emergency care, doctors were surprised to discover that the patient had suffered a dangerous stroke. In investigating the cause of the patient's traffic accident, doctors said that at that time, the patient had a sudden stroke, causing the patient to fall into a dangerous state, unable to control his body...
Don't ignore early signs of stroke
Stroke is the leading cause of disability and the third leading cause of death in Vietnam. There are approximately 200,000 stroke cases each year, approximately 50% of which are fatal. Although many people are lucky enough to survive a stroke, they still suffer from severe sequelae, even losing the ability to work, creating a heavy burden for their families and society.
“To treat cerebral infarction, it is necessary to detect the disease early and intervene promptly to be able to save the patient’s life. In children, cerebral infarction causes a very high risk of death, however, understanding of this disease is still limited, so it is easy to misdiagnose it with other diseases, delaying the treatment process,” said Dr. Ton.
Stroke prevention is a huge and difficult challenge. The general recommendation for the golden time in stroke is 6 hours. Therefore, stroke patients should be treated as soon as possible.
Some common mistakes when having a stroke are scraping the patient's head; inserting needles into the head of the hand; using traditional medicine on your own; waiting for the patient to stabilize before taking them to the hospital; spreading wrong ideas about stroke treatment; confusing it with other diseases.
To prevent stroke, according to Dr. Ton, the most important thing is to maintain a scientific lifestyle; not use stimulants; exercise regularly; examine and treat, effectively control related diseases such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, etc.
