On October 24, Hue Central Hospital (BVTW Hue) announced that the unit had just set a new milestone in Vietnamese medicine when it successfully performed the first kidney transplant in the country using continuous kidney preservation technology with cooling down by Life Port (Hypothermic machine Perfusion - HMP).
Previously, on the evening of October 17, after receiving information from Thong Nhat Hospital (HCMC) about an organ donation patient, Professor, Doctor Pham Nhu Hiep - Director of Hue Central Hospital sent a team to coordinate with Thong Nhat Hospital and Cho Ray Hospital to collect and coordinate multiple organs.
The donor was Ms. Bui Thi P.L. (born in 1964, Ho Chi Minh City), was confirmed brain-dead and her family voluntarily donated organs. The heart was transplanted at Thong Nhat Hospital, two corneas and one kidney were transferred to Hue, the remaining kidney was transplanted to a patient in Ho Chi Minh City.
Due to the elderly donor having underlying diseases, Hue doctors decided to apply HMP Life Port preservation technology to optimize the quality of transplanted kidneys. The system allows continuous pumping of KPS-1 preservation solution in a controlled cooling environment, helping the kidneys to "maintain survival" for 12 hours of transportation from Ho Chi Minh City to Hue while still ensuring function. This is a national record for the time of cold blood anemia in the history of Vietnamese organ transplantation.
On October 18, doctors at Hue Central Hospital performed a kidney transplant for patient Tran Q. (born in 1983, Da Nang) - who had a kidney transplant 11 years ago. After the transplant, the patient recovered well, kidney function was stable, no need for blood filtration, and test results were within normal limits.
Professor, Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep emphasized: The application of Life Port machines affirms the capacity of the Hue General Hospital team and shows that Vietnam has mastered the world's leading advanced organ storage technology. This is an important step forward to help expand the ability to coordinate, improve the efficiency and quality of organ transplants nationwide.
Since the first kidney transplant in 2001, Hue Central Hospital has performed nearly 300 kidney transplants each year, mastering many difficult techniques such as multiple blood vessel transplantation, second transplantation, endoscopic transplantation from a living person and organ transplantation from a brain-dead person.
To date, the hospital has performed more than 2,500 organ and tissue transplants, one of the few units in the country that master the technique of "third-order" transplantation - heart, liver, kidney - with an almost absolute success rate.
The success of this cross-Vietnam kidney transplant is not only a breakthrough in organ preservation technology, but also demonstrates the spirit of cooperation, humanity and aspiration for the patient's life.
