Coconut water is a beverage used to supplement electrolytes. However, despite its simple ingredients, it still contains a small amount of sugar and calories. Therefore, it cannot replace plain water to drink continuously.
Consuming too much over a long period of time can lead to electrolyte imbalances, causing symptoms such as muscle weakness, cramps and irregular heartbeat. The Thai Public Health Agency recommends that the amount of coconut water consumed each day should not exceed one coconut, equivalent to about 250-300 ml.
You can drink coconut water in the morning or evening, but because coconut water contains a lot of electrolytes, it is best to supplement it in the morning on an empty stomach and after exercise. In addition, you can also drink coconut water after meals to support bowel movements.
However, when the potassium ionization concentration in the blood is higher than 4.7 mmol/L, it will be diagnosed with hyperkalemia. If you drink coconut water with a high potassium content, it can aggravate initial symptoms such as numbness in the limbs and weakness in the body.
If the kidneys are not strong enough, it will be difficult for the kidneys to filter potassium ions from the blood. People with kidney failure or chronic kidney disease should not drink coconut water with a high potassium content.
