According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan - Director of Surgery, Phuong Dong General Hospital, diet is the most important factor in controlling weight and preventing overweight and obesity in both adults and children. However, nutritional needs and approaches will be different in both subjects.
In children
Provide adequate nutrition without excess: Children need high levels of nutrition for development, but this does not mean that all calorie-rich foods are good. Limit foods high in sugar, unhealthy fats, and refined carbohydrates. Instead, focus on foods rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and protein from healthy sources such as chicken, fish, green vegetables, whole grains, and fresh fruits.
Encourage healthy eating habits from an early age: Children are easily affected by family eating habits. Parents should set an example by choosing healthy foods and teaching children to recognize the difference between nutritious foods and fast food, snacks.
In adults
Control calorie intake: Adults, especially those who are less active, need to pay attention to daily calorie intake. Adjust your diet, cut down on sugary and saturated fat foods, and increase green vegetables, fruits, protein from fish, poultry, and whole grains.
Balanced eating and not fasting: Fasting or excessive dieting can lead to metabolic disorders and cause obesity after eating again. A balanced diet, containing enough groups of substances and limiting processed foods will help adults maintain a reasonable weight without causing negative effects on health.
