Guidance on diet and lifestyle for people with gastritis

THÙY DƯƠNG (T/H) |

A reasonable diet and lifestyle contribute to reducing symptoms, supporting treatment and limiting complications in people with gastritis effectively.

According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan - Director of Surgery, Phuong Dong General Hospital, gastritis is a common disease affecting the stomach lining, causing many uncomfortable symptoms and can lead to serious complications if not managed properly.

In addition to medication as prescribed by the doctor, a reasonable diet, healthy lifestyle and periodic health monitoring play an important role in the recovery process.

Diet for gastritis patients

General principle

Choose light foods: Prioritize low-fat, easy-to-digest foods that do not irritate the stomach lining. Foods to choose include:

Starchy foods: Rice, bread, potatoes and cereals.

Easy-to-digest protein: Poultry, fish, eggs, tofu and low-fat dairy products.

Fresh vegetables and fruits: Green vegetables, carrots, pumpkins, cucumbers, bananas, apples, pears. Choose vegetables and fruits that are not highly acidic.

Avoid irritating foods: Some foods can irritate the stomach lining, increase acid secretion and cause inflammation, including:

Spicy foods: Chili, pepper, mustard, ginger.

Foods with acidity: Oranges, lemons, tomatoes, pineapples.

Alcoholic and caffeinated drinks: Alcohol, beer, coffee, strong tea, carbonated soft drinks.

Fried, fried or high-fat foods: Crispy fried dishes, fatty meat, butter.

Eat many small meals: Divide into many small meals a day (4-6 meals) instead of eating few large meals. This helps reduce pressure on the stomach and control acid secretion.

Drink enough water: You should drink warm water or filtered water between meals. Avoid drinking too much water during meals to avoid diluting digestive juices and causing indigestion.

Foods good for the stomach

Yogurt: Contains probiotics, which help balance intestinal bacteria and can reduce gastritis.

Porridge and soup: Easy to digest, provide nutrients and water, suitable for patients with acute gastritis.

A small amount of ginger can help reduce nausea and improve digestion. However, avoid using too much because it can irritate the mucous membrane.

Has anti-inflammatory properties and can help protect the stomach lining. Honey can be added to warm water or herbal tea.

Healthy living and lifestyle

Stress management

Relax and rest: Spend time on relaxing activities such as yoga, meditation, reading, or listening to music to reduce stress.

Getting enough sleep: Ensure 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Sleep plays an important role in restoring the body and maintaining overall health.

Exercise regularly

Gentle exercise: Walking, swimming or yoga are gentle exercises that help improve digestion, strengthen health and reduce stress. However, heavy physical exercises should be avoided as they can increase pressure on the stomach.

Avoid bad habits

Quit smoking: Smoking stimulates stomach acid production and weakens the protective barrier of the mucous membrane. Quitting smoking can help reduce the risk of gastritis and complications.

Limit alcohol: Alcohol can cause irritation and gastritis. Limit or completely avoid drinking alcohol to protect the stomach.
