HCMC - Vung Tau General Hospital performed timely surgery to save the life of a patient who died in a nearly 5m long small intestine due to a blockage of the superior mesenteric artery.

On October 21, Vung Tau General Hospital announced that it had successfully treated a patient with intestinal necrosis due to clogged peripheral arteries. This is a condition of blockage of the intestinal arteries that prevent blood from reaching the small intestine and large intestine, causing necrosis.

Previously, the male patient (60 years old, living in Rach Dua ward, Ho Chi Minh City) was admitted to the hospital with severe abdominal pain, strong vomiting, and diarrhea. The examination results and CT scans showed that the patient had a blockage of the superior mesenteric artery and bulging intestinal fees.

This is a very rare case with a very high mortality rate, so the medical team quickly performed emergency surgery. During the surgery, the doctors discovered a nearly 5m long small intestine that had been necrosed, so they removed it, connected the remaining intestine and actively resuscitated it after surgery. After more than 10 days of intensive resuscitation treatment, the patient's health has stabilized and he was discharged home.

According to Dr. CKII Nguyen Van Bay - Head of the General Surgery Department of Vung Tau General Hospital, the above-mentioned suspensive artery blockage surgery has a low savings rate and ranges from 0 to 40% depending on the level and cause, the most appropriate surgery time is 6 hours before the start of the disease.

The disease also has a variety of symptoms, difficult to diagnose, so it is easy to ignore, with many causes such as: atherosclerosis; thrombosis; vasculitis... The disease often starts with atypical abdominal pain, which can be accompanied by digestive disorders, causing patients to be subjective.

If not diagnosed and treated promptly, it can lead to necrotizing the small intestine and colon causing infection, severe poisoning, leading to multiple organ failure, with a mortality rate of up to 60-100%. Even if they can be saved, their lives will be affected by the removal of most of the patient's intestines.

Therefore, cases of unknown abdominal pain, especially those with cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, diabetes... need to go to medical examination and treatment facilities immediately for timely examination and treatment.
