New market lacks traders, unusually gloomy
After nearly half a year of operation, the new Van Canh market (Canh Vinh commune, Gia Lai) with modern investment, expected to become a shopping center for local people, has fallen into a state of desolation, with no traders, many kiosks are closed quietly.

Van Canh market was formerly Canh Hiep market, planned as the central market of Van Canh district (old Binh Dinh province). The project has a total investment of more than 21 billion VND, a scale of nearly 1.5 hectares, started construction in 2020 and will be put into operation from the beginning of May 2025.
According to records, in recent months, some traders have abandoned stalls in the new market and displayed them at points along National Highway 19C through Canh Vinh and Van Canh communes, causing disorder in traffic safety.

Inside the new spacious market, dozens of kiosks are still "closed", with no tenants because the expected price of the premises is considered too high. The long distance from the new market to the residential area is also the reason why the new market is sluggish and lacking buyers.
The situation of traders leaving the new market and gathering to do business along the road also makes business activities in the market even more deserted.

Ms. Hanh Thi Yen (born in 1969, a trader at Van Canh New Market) shared: "Shopping is sluggish, I am so sad. The day before, I heard that the government was taking action to reduce the situation of trading in the market, I thought customers would come here to buy, but after only a few days, now there are only a few days left."
Concerns about waste of construction
On October 21, speaking with Lao Dong, Mr. Duong Hiep Hoa - Chairman of the People's Committee of Canh Vinh commune - admitted that there was a shortage of traders and gloomy trading activities at the new Van Canh market after many months of operation.
"According to the plan, the rental price of premises in the market is considered quite high. Currently, the rental price has not been agreed upon, so it is not possible to organize an auction or lease of kiosks in the market.
The reflection of traders on high rental prices is correct. The commune has proposed to the Department of Industry and Trade and the Provincial People's Committee on this and is waiting for the province to approve the price for the locality to implement," said Mr. Hoa.

Regarding the situation of traders leaving the market to do business, Mr. Hoa said that the commune has coordinated with the Van Canh commune government to encourage people to return to the new market to ensure security and order in the area.
Mr. Hoa is also concerned that the new market will not operate effectively, not meeting the buying and selling needs of the people, leading to the risk of wasting the project if the problems with rental prices and geographical locations are not resolved soon.

"The rental price is built according to regulations and is quite high. The commune has proposed that the province approve a special price to apply to the new Van Canh market, creating conditions for people to do business, because this market cannot be compared to markets in other urban or suburban areas," said Mr. Hoa.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Viet - Chairman of Van Canh Commune People's Committee - said that in recent times, the locality has been propagating and handling the situation of illegal gatherings and trading, encroachment on the roadside, sidewalks and sidewalks, causing disorder in traffic safety.

Over the implementation period, most traders have complied with the move to the new Van Canh market to do business and trade. Many spontaneous markets have been eliminated, no longer there is a gathering of market gatherings that cause insecurity, disorder, and traffic safety as before. Currently, 16 traders have moved to the new Van Canh market, initially trading has been stable.
