On July 15, information from the Dak Lak health sector said that rabies is an acute infectious disease caused by the rabies virus.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), each year Vietnam records 70 to 100 deaths from this disease.
The government aims to eliminate rabies by 2030. The disease can be effectively prevented if fully vaccinated and treated properly when exposed.
However, when symptoms appear, the disease almost always leads to death, so disease prevention is the most important solution.
In Dak Lak, from the beginning of 2025 to now, the provincial Center for Disease Control (CDC) has recorded 6 deaths from rabies. Notably, many cases of dog bites without vaccination have led to heartbreaking consequences.
For example, Y.R.N (born in 2012), residing in Ea Khau commune, died on the night of July 12. Previously, on July 10, she had symptoms of fever, fatigue, headache, fear of water, fear of wind. The patient was then taken to the hospital for treatment with a diagnosis of rabies attack.
According to the family, about 2 years ago, the dog bit her in the neck but she did not get vaccinated, the dog was then slaughtered. Recently, he was scratched by a dog on his wrist and still did not get vaccinated.
Currently, this dog is still alive. About 10 days before being admitted to the hospital, he was still bitten by a dog but it was unknown which animal, did not inform relatives and did not get vaccinated.
According to the CDC Dak Lak, a dog died near the patient's house about a week ago, of unknown cause.
To prevent rabies, the Dak Lak Department of Health has issued a plan to reduce cases and deaths, control diseases in animals, and eliminate the disease by 2030.
Measures implemented include: Organizing expanded immunization, ensuring that subjects are vaccinated with enough doses and on time; reviewing high-risk groups, especially ethnic minorities and the poor; organizing mobile vaccination in remote areas; ensuring adequate supply of vaccines and vaccination supplies, and implementing conservation in accordance with regulations.
