Does using electronic devices increase the risk of obesity in children?

Excessive use of electronic devices has negative effects on young children, so does this increase the risk of obesity in children?

The link between screen time and obesity

Too much screen time is linked to childhood obesity. When children spend long hours in front of a screen, they tend to be less active and lazy. Lack of exercise contributes to weight gain and unhealthy snacking habits.

A study published in PLOS One analyzed data from 29,480 adolescents (49.4% female), finding that those who watched TV or played video games more than 1 hour/day were more likely to be overweight or obese than those who spent less time on electronic devices.

Similarly, research in the journal Pediatrics found that children who used screens for more than two hours a day were more likely to be overweight.

How to limit screen time in children?

Set screen time limits:

One of the most effective ways to reduce screen time in children is to set clear limits. Depending on your child’s age, decide how much time they can spend on electronic devices each day. For example, you might allow a maximum of 2 hours of screen time per day and explain why you need to limit your child’s use of electronic devices.

Implement a no-electronics zone:

Create specific areas in your home where electronics are not allowed, such as the dining table, bedrooms, and family gatherings. By establishing these device-free zones, you will help your children enhance communication and have quality meals without the distraction of electronics.

Healthy diet:

Introduce your child to healthy eating habits by cooking healthy meals together. For example, you could make zucchini noodles, smoothie bowls, or pizza topped with colorful vegetables together. By making healthy foods visually appealing, you can distract your child from the screen and get them involved in the cooking activity.

Encourage outdoor activities:

Encourage your child to spend more time outdoors, aiming for at least 1-2 hours a day. Activities such as playing in the park, cycling or participating in sports can significantly reduce your child’s screen time while also promoting physical fitness. During the holidays, you can also consider organising family outings or outdoor games to increase fun and physical activity for your child.
