The journey to cure the fetus from the womb

With remarkable advances, doctors can detect and treat fetal birth defects even in the uterus.

On August 1, at the ceremony to put into operation the Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialization of the Vinmec Health System, MSc. Dr. Dinh Thi Hien Le - Head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialization at the Women's Health Center, Vinmec Times City Hospital - shared a case of being saved by obstetrics and gynecology.

Present at the opening ceremony, N.T.L was speechless, his eyes were big and round, always smiling whenever his name was called.

Holding the baby in her hand, MSc. Dr. Dinh Thi Hien Le recounted: The case of baby N.T.L, doctors really miss it. Without waiting for birth, these babies were given intervention by doctors to regain their lives from the mother's womb.

A girl suffered from two dangerous conditions at the same time: doubletal and slow-developing hemorrhage syndrome. Removing the fetus from the uterus early can make it impossible for both of them to survive. Faced with the problem of life and death, doctors and the family have come to a heartbreaking decision: to accept sacrificing a child to save the other child. The baby was kept in the mother's womb and continued to be closely monitored. By the day of birth, the baby was healthy and developing normally - a result of sacrifice, courage and advanced medical skills".

Also here, another twin couple - two girls named Nhi - were diagnosed with payment syndrome of both embryos from the 17th week of pregnancy. The doctor promptly intervened with amenorrhea endoscopic surgery and continuously monitored until the 36th week of pregnancy. The two babies were born safely, are now full months and are developing healthily.

Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Ba Nha - Director of the Women's Health Center, Vinmec Times City Hospital - said: Vinmec Health System officially launched the Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist - the first private health unit in Vietnam licensed by the Ministry of Health to comprehensively perform diagnostic, surgical and treatment techniques for the fetus in the womb.

The specialty is built on an interdisciplinary professional foundation such as obstetrics, genetics, imaging diagnosis, neonatal resuscitation... and is capable of implementing advanced techniques such as intensive ultrasound, sales vessel endoscopy, blood transfusion in the uterus, treatment of paymentstroke syndrome, heart failure, herniated arthritis, Thalassemia, preeclampsia...

According to MSc. Dr. Dinh Thi Hien Le - the person who directly performed hundreds of fetal interventions in Vietnam, this is a field that requires high expertise, modern equipment and close interdisciplinary coordination. Obstetrics and gynecology considers the fetus an independent patient, which can be treated from the mother's womb stage to reduce mortality and postpartum complications.

"Oberstetrics and gynecology is a field with a very fragile line between treatment and risk. Success depends not only on expertise and modern equipment, but also requires interdisciplinary coordination and trust from mothers. Doctors always carefully consider and consult with multiple specialties to come up with the most optimal solution for each pregnant woman. Obstetrics and gynecology allows considering the fetus as an independent patient that can be diagnosed and treated right in the mothers womb, MSc. Dr. Dinh Thi Hien Le further analyzed.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 8 million babies are born with at least one birth defect each year; of which, 240,000 babies die within the first 28 days of life. In Vietnam, this number is estimated at about 40,000 cases per year, however, due to the high requirements for expertise, equipment and interdisciplinary coordination, obstetrics and gynecology has not been popular.
