On December 19, information from Kien Giang Provincial Oncology Hospital said that doctors from the Cancer Surgery Department had just successfully performed surgery on a case with a giant ovarian tumor. Patient L.T.H (54 years old; residing in An Minh district, Kien Giang province) was admitted to the hospital on November 28, 2024.
The patient reported that her abdomen had been abnormally enlarged for about 5 months but she did not seek treatment and only used traditional medicine. On the same day of admission, her abdomen became increasingly enlarged, and she had difficulty breathing continuously and gradually. Seeing that the symptoms did not improve, her family took her to Kien Giang Provincial General Hospital. After a CT scan, the patient was monitored for ovarian tumors and then transferred to Kien Giang Provincial Oncology Hospital for further treatment.
Speaking with Lao Dong, Dr. Ho Van Ut Muoi - Head of the Department of Cancer Surgery (directly performing the surgery), Kien Giang Provincial Oncology Hospital - said that when examining, it was discovered that the patient had a large tumor in the lower abdomen, about 45 x 50 cm, occupying the entire abdomen, with unclear boundaries.
The patient was given blood tests, abdominal ultrasound, and abdominal CT scan, which revealed an ovarian tumor.
“The patient was consulted by a specialist, diagnosed with a malignant ovarian tumor and scheduled for surgery on December 18. The surgery lasted 4 hours and 20 minutes, the left ovarian tumor weighed 15 kg and was about 0.5 m in diameter,” said Dr. Muoi.
After surgery, the patient recovered well, with little pain from the surgical wound.
Doctor Muoi also informed that previously, the hospital had performed surgery on many patients with large tumors, the heaviest weighing about 13 kg, but this is the case of the largest tumor weight and size recorded up to this point.
