On July 22, Hue Central Hospital said that after nearly two weeks of fighting for her life, N.T.T.M (2 years old, residing in Loc An commune, Hue city) was discharged from the hospital in a completely alert state, without leaving any neurological sequelae - a rare case of recovery thanks to the extraordinary efforts of the medical team of Hue Central Hospital.
Previously, on the afternoon of July 6, M fell into a Koi fish pond in her yard, and it was unclear when she was soaking in the water. When discovered, the child had cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, cyanosis, and was in a deep coma.
The family immediately performed on-site cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for 2 minutes and luckily the child showed signs of breathing again.
The child was taken to the commune health station and then urgently transferred to Hue Central Hospital in an extremely critical condition: deep confusion, severe respiratory failure, SpO2 is only 80% even though he is breathing oxygen. Doctors urgently arranged intubation, mechanical ventilation, use vasopressors, antibiotics and especially apply the commanded hypothermia technique - an advanced resuscitation method to protect the brain after cardiac arrest.
After 5 days of intensive treatment, M was taken off the ventilator and transferred out of the resuscitation room on the 7th day. Up to now, the child has walked, eaten normally, and recovered almost completely - which is considered a " miracle" for the child who had a cardiac arrest due to drowning.
According to doctors, super cooling is a controlled cooling technique that helps reduce brain damage after lack of oxygen. This is one of the key factors that help save life and protect nerve function for baby M. From April to June 2025, the Department of Intensive Care - Pediatric Emergency, Pediatric Center, Hue Central Hospital received 10 cases of severe drowning.
Although all were saved, most of the children left behind serious brain sequelae. The case of baby M is a rare exception, bringing emotions and confidence to many families.
