Doctor Nguyen Van Phuc, Department of Andrology, 108 Central Military Hospital, said that the patient who broke his penis at home was successfully treated by doctors.
According to the patient's family, 3 hours before being admitted to the hospital, the patient broke his own penis while it was erect. After breaking it, the patient felt pain, swelling, bruising of the penis, and bright red blood coming from the opening of the penis. The family took the patient to the 108 Military Central Hospital for emergency treatment.
Upon admission to the department, doctors found that the patient had swelling and bruising of the penis, and that the scrotum and testicles were normal. Ultrasound results showed a penile fracture and subpenile hematoma. The patient was diagnosed with a ruptured corpus cavernosum and corpus spongiosum due to self-fracture and was scheduled for emergency surgery.
Doctor Phuc said that this was a complicated case of penile fracture, the patient had torn both the corpus cavernosum and the corpus spongiosum. The surgical team had to remove the hematoma and suture the corpus cavernosum and the corpus spongiosum within 90 minutes.
Although the surgery is successful, the patient is still at risk of facing complications such as: Penile curvature causing loss of aesthetics, affecting physiological function; urethral stricture: Difficulty in urination; erectile dysfunction: Seriously affecting sexual life.
"The leading cause of penile fractures in Vietnam is the habit of manually breaking the penis while it is erect. Men aged 20-30 who have strong, rough sex have a higher risk of penile fracture than those aged 40-50. Some rare cases are due to accidents or collisions while the penis is erect," added Dr. Phuc.
Doctor Phuc recommends that men should limit masturbation and give up the habit of bending their penis. When having sex, they should choose a safe and suitable position and avoid rough sex. When seeing the penis swollen, painful, or bruised, they should quickly go to a medical facility with a Andrology department to have a doctor intervene and avoid future complications.
