Risk of death from sudden cardiac arrest, warning from daily habits

Hà Lê |

Sudden cardiac arrest can take a life in just a few minutes, but many people are still indifferent to dangerous habits.

On the afternoon of July 31, FPT Corporation announced that at 4:10 p.m. on July 31, 2025, Mr. Hoang Nam Tien, member of the Board of Directors of FPT Corporation, Vice Chairman of the Board of FPT University, former Chairman of FPT Telecommunications Joint Stock Company, former Chairman of FPT Software Company Limited, passed away from a stroke at the age of 57.

According to doctors, sudden cardiac arrest was the reason for Mr. Hoang Nam Tien's death. This is one of the most dangerous cardiovascular events, which can cause death in just a few minutes, even if given timely emergency care.

According to MSc. Dr. Nguyen Hoai Vu - Department of Cardiology, Tam Anh General Hospital, Hanoi, sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death related to cardiovascular disease, often occurring without warning and can take a life in just a few minutes if not given timely emergency care. Sudden death accounts for 50% of deaths from cardiovascular disease, but the survival rate is only about 10%.

Doctor Vu said that cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly stops contracting, making it impossible for blood to circulate to the brain and other organs. The patient immediately lost consciousness, stopped breathing, lost reflex and could die within a few minutes if not given emergency intervention.

The common cause of sudden cardiac arrest is arrhythmia, especially peritoneal fibrillation - a condition in which the heart heart beat at a displacement and cannot pump blood effectively. In addition, underlying diseases such as enlarged heart muscle disease, congenital electrolyte abnormalities of the heart, vascular damage, or chest injury (Commotio cordis) can also be the cause.

Notably, many indirect factors in modern lifestyle are increasing the risk of sudden death, especially in people with pre-existing cardiovascular disease:

Prolonged stress causes the body to secrete too much cortisol and adrenaline hormones, increasing blood pressure and easily disrupting the heart rate.

Using stimulants such as caffeine (te, coffee, energy drinks), alcohol and especially drugs can cause the heart to beat rapidly, disrupt the heart rate, and even cause cardiac arrest in young, healthy people.

Unhealthy diets, laziness or excessive exercise also pose a risk of heart failure.

Electrolyte imbalance or improper medication can cause arrhythmia, leading to cardiac arrest.

As soon as there are signs of suspected cardiac arrest such as chest pain, a feeling of pressure, chest burning, shortness of breath, dizziness, rapid heartbeat or loss of consciousness - you need to call an emergency room immediately for a chance to survive.

Doctor Vu recommends that people over 40 years old or those with risk factors such as cardiovascular disease, smoking, alcohol consumption, prolonged stress or relatives with cardiovascular disease should have regular health check-ups. Early detection and treatment can prevent life-threatening complications.

To prevent the risk of sudden death, each person needs to proactively build a healthy lifestyle: eat scientifically, reduce salt and saturated fat, exercise at least 30 minutes a day, stay relaxed, manage stress, limit alcohol and absolutely do not smoke. This is a simple but extremely effective "medicine" to protect the heart.
