According to Dr. Brunda MS, Consultant, Internal Medicine, Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru (India), dehydration and food poisoning are two common health conditions, but they can cause similar symptoms, especially diarrhea and vomiting. However, there are some factors that help to clearly distinguish between the two conditions. Here are some important differences to recognize and treat properly.
Causes
Dehydration: happens when the body is dehydrated in excess of its water intake, due to sweat, diarrhea, vomiting, or not drinking enough water. Factors such as heavy physical activity and hot weather also contribute to increased risk.
Food poisoning: Due to consuming foods contaminated with bacteria ( Salmonella, E. coli), viruses (norovirus) or toxic chemicals.
Symptoms
Dehydration: Starting out slowly, feeling dry mouth, tired, dizzy, light diarrhea. If you do not supplement water, it can cause dry skin, low eyes, and low urine.
Food poisoning: Symptoms appear quickly (1-6 hours after eating), including severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting and fever. Symptoms can last from a few hours to a few days.
Prolonged time
Dehydration: Improve when taking extra water, but if not treated promptly, it can be dangerous, especially in children and the elderly.
Food poisoning: Symptoms can last from a few hours to a few days, requiring medical treatment if the condition is severe.
Special signs
Dehydration: Dry mouth, low eyes, dry skin, little urine. If serious, they may be confused or faint.
Food poisoning: High fever, severe abdominal pain, feces that may be bloody, need to see a doctor.
Relationship
Food poisoning can cause serious dehydration due to vomiting and diarrhea. Dehydration also increases the severity of food poisoning.
Preventive measures
Dehydration: Drink enough water, especially during hot weather or during heavy physical activity. Choose water and natural fruit juice. Eat water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables.
Food poisoning: Maintain food hygiene and safety, wash your hands, cook cook thoroughly and store food properly.
Note
Dr. Brunda MS says that while dehydration and food poisoning can have some symptoms similar to diarrhea, fatigue and nausea, the cause and treatment for the two conditions are completely different. Understanding them will help you handle situations properly, avoiding serious complications. If you experience serious symptoms, you should seek timely medical attention to ensure your health.
