On March 21, Quang Tri Provincial General Hospital said that the unit had just successfully operated on a 104-year-old female patient, residing in Cua Viet commune, Quang Tri province, suffering from cataracts. This is the oldest patient among those treated at the hospital.
According to her family, the old woman has been blurred vision for many years. For about 6 months now, her right eye has been almost completely blind, causing difficulties in daily life and walking.
After being admitted to the hospital, the patient was examined by ophthalmologists, and underwent in-depth tests such as ophthalmic tomography, intraocular ultrasound and overall assessment. The results showed that both eyes had cataracts, a common disease in the elderly. In addition, the patient had a history of hypertension.
Doctors have indicated hydrofocal dilatation surgery (Phaco) combined with intraocular lenses. After surgery, the patient's eyes recovered well, vision improved significantly. The patient can see more clearly, walk on his own and live conveniently.
According to Quang Tri Provincial General Hospital, cataract surgery in elderly patients poses many challenges due to the aging structure of the eyes, poor dilated pupils, weak glassyloid ligaments and is often accompanied by systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, kidney failure. However, thanks to careful preparation before surgery, the surgery took place safely and effectively.
Doctors recommend that cataracts are common diseases in the elderly but can be effectively treated by surgery. Even very elderly patients can still be intervened if their overall condition is assessed and underlying conditions are well controlled. When signs such as blurred vision, brightness, and reduced night vision appear, people should go to specialized eye facilities for examination and timely treatment to avoid affecting their quality of life.
