Insufficient stretching time
A bad habit is not holding a stretch long enough for the exercise to be effective. We need to hold the stretch for at least 30 seconds to 1 minute to get the best results.
Additionally, holding a stretch for too long, such as more than 2 minutes, especially when you are just starting out in your stretching routine, can cause overstretching of the muscles, leading to pain or injury.
Incorrect stretching form and posture
With age-related muscle changes, proper technique and form become even more important. Incorrect stretching posture not only reduces the effectiveness of a stretching exercise, but can also exacerbate mobility issues.
Don't breathe deeply with your belly.
Deep diaphragmatic breathing (belly breathing) is key to relaxing the muscles while stretching, allowing for a deeper stretch. This is especially important as muscles become more tense as we age.
