Dengue fever shortens outbreak cycle, risk of increasing cases

The Ministry of Health believes that dengue fever is still under control, however, the risk of outbreak is very high.

At an online conference with the theme "Strengthening the prevention and control of dengue fever and infectious diseases in 2025" on July 11, with Mr. Vo Hai Son - Deputy Director of the Department of Prevention, Ministry of Health said that from the beginning of the year to July 8, 2025, the whole country has recorded 32,189 cases of dengue fever, including 5 deaths. Compared to the same period in 2024 (recorded 36,276 cases and 6 deaths), the number of cases decreased by 11.2%, deaths decreased by 1 case.

However, we are currently entering the peak season of dengue fever. Hot, humid weather and heavy rain are ideal conditions for disease-carrying mosquitoes to develop. Some localities recorded a high increase in the number of cases compared to the same period such as: Ben Tre increased by 346.5%, Tay Ninh increased by 274.3%, Long An increased by 208.6%, Dong Nai increased by 191.7% and Ho Chi Minh City increased by 151.4%.

"In the coming time, it is possible to continue to record an increase in the number of cases in localities if epidemic prevention measures are not promptly and drastically implemented," Mr. Vo Hai Son predicted.

Dr. Hoang Minh Duc, Director of the Department of Prevention and Control, added: In Vietnam, dengue fever is rampant in most localities. On average, the whole country records about 100,000 cases and about 100 deaths each year. The disease occurs all year round, but usually increases sharply in the months from June to November. Although the number of cases is concentrated in the southern provinces and cities, in recent years, the Northern, Central and Central Highlands regions have also begun to record a gradual increase in cases.

Dr. Hoang Minh Duc also commented on the situation: Dengue fever epidemic is still under control, but with favorable weather for mosquito development, the risk of increasing cases is very high. The number of cases usually increases from June to December, and the outbreak cycle is shortening to 3-4 years. Without timely precautions, the epidemic could break out as strongly as in 2022 with more than 370,000 cases. The Ministry of Health has directed localities, especially areas with high numbers of cases, to proactively control the epidemic early to prevent the spread of the epidemic.

Mr. Vo Hai Son added that the Ministry of Health highly appreciated the proactiveness of many provinces and cities in identifying hot spots and high-risk areas, organizing close supervision, detecting cases early and handling outbreaks right from the time of detection. Mockrowing activities, removing mosquito larvae and earthworms have been strongly implemented, contributing to stabilizing the epidemic situation.

Not only the health system, but also the entire political system at the grassroots level has been mobilized to propagate and guide people to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds and kill bedbugs in households. This proactiveness has helped control the spread rate and quickly extinguish potential outbreaks.

The treatment system has also been carefully prepared, with hospitals implementing treatment dividers to avoid overload. The Ministry of Health requires medical facilities to increase training in diagnostic skills and patient classification, especially at the grassroots level, to reduce the risk of death.
