Habits that cause bloating
Dr. Akshat Chadha - a therapeutic lifestyle consultant and Head of Medicine at Luke Coutinho Holistic Healing System (India) - said that bloating is caused by a sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy intestines or daily habits and the type of food consumed.
According to Dr. Chadha, common causes of bloating include:
Sitting for long periods of time; wearing tight clothing; chewing gum; eating fruit with cooked food; swallowing saliva or drinking water quickly; talking while eating or eating with your mouth open; drinking a lot of water while eating; eating quickly; lack of probiotics in food; drinking alcohol, especially beer, and smoking in any form; constipation…
Sharing the same view, Dr. Nadendla Hazarathaiah - consultant in digestive surgery, gastrointestinal cancer and endoscopic surgeon at Gleneagles Hospital, Lakdi Ka Pul (Hyderabad, India) - said that artificial sweeteners and substances such as sorbitol and aspartame can ferment in the intestine, causing gas and bloating.
Although healthy, excess fiber from beans, lentils, and whole grains can also cause gas and bloating in some individuals.
Stress and lack of sleep also lead to bloating.
Dr Nadendla Hazarathaiah adds that bloating is more than just an uncomfortable feeling, it is often an early sign of irritation or inflammation in the gut. If left unchecked, it can lead to more serious conditions such as chronic inflammation, leaky gut syndrome or even acid reflux.
Intolerance often manifests as bloating and can be caused by a variety of foods, depending on the individual.
Additionally, an overgrowth or imbalance in the gut microflora can contribute to the condition. Imbalances can occur when people take prebiotics, probiotics, or other supplements without proper guidance, or when their eating habits are significantly different from what their gut is used to.
Stress, as well as lack of sleep, can disrupt your gut microbiome and lead to bloating.
Effects on skin health
Dr Rashmi Shetty, a cosmetic dermatologist at Ra Skin and Aesthetics Clinic (Mumbai, India), says that when your gut is out of balance, it can manifest on your skin, potentially causing problems like eczema, psoriasis flare-ups, acne, or simply sensitive or inflamed skin.
This connection is why it is important to focus on maintaining gut health, as it directly affects your skin health and overall health.
