Accelerate and tighten the quality of universal health check-ups

NGUYỄN LY |

Ho Chi Minh City is entering a peak period of universal health check-ups, as the health sector and localities accelerate non-administrative check-ups.

From early morning, hundreds of people in Binh Gia commune, Ho Chi Minh City received invitations to the people's health check-up point organized by Thu Duc General Hospital in coordination with the locality.

In the 150-day nationwide health check-up program, Thu Duc General Hospital has organized check-ups for tens of thousands of people in Tam Binh ward, Hiep Binh, Long Son commune, Binh Gia and many other areas.

To maintain mobile examination points, the hospital must rotate personnel, arrange working shifts all weekends, while medical examination and treatment activities at the hospital are still maintained 24/24 hours.

At Do Van Day Secondary School (Hoc Mon commune), 12 doctors and nurses of Hoc Mon Regional General Hospital examined more than 300 people. The hospital also deployed 12 examination teams at other locations, with a plan to examine about 5,000 visits.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trong Hao - Director of Hoc Mon Regional General Hospital said that the hospital is in charge of periodic health check-ups for people in Ba Diem commune, one of 9 communes and special zones selected by the city to accelerate the program.

The hospital arranges a separate examination area, maintains mobile examination teams according to the needs of the health station, an average of 8 teams/day, peak weekends of 12-14 teams and additional evening examination teams. Human resources are supplemented from doctors with appropriate practicing licenses.

As of August 22, we have examined 73,599 visits, ranking first in the city in terms of cumulative visits from January 1 to August 22. Each visit is completed into an electronic health record, connecting test results and updating to the city's health sector portal," said Dr. Nguyen Trong Hao.

According to a representative of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, when the program is implemented on a city-wide scale, with a large number of people and many medical facilities participating, besides the requirements for progress, an important issue is how to ensure uniform quality, fully complying with professional regulations and laws at all examination points.

The actual implementation also shows that some units still have difficulties in arranging human resources, facilities, organizing and coordinating examination activities; data updates in some places are not timely.

From that reality, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health has developed a set of criteria for evaluating the quality of universal health check-ups, which is both a tool for facilities to proactively review and improve themselves, and a basis for management agencies to inspect and supervise uniformly throughout the city.

The set of criteria includes 8 groups with 48 criteria, a total score of 100 and 5 bonus points, including 24 core criteria and 8 compulsory criteria.

From September 3rd to December 15th, 2026, the Inspection and Supervision Teams of the Department of Health are expected to directly evaluate all health facilities participating in universal health check-ups in the city, combined with checking records, comparing data and observing the reality at facilities as well as mobile examination points.

The inspection is not only aimed at detecting inappropriate content for rectification, but also helps to identify the actual difficulties of each unit in terms of human resources, facilities, equipment, organization of examination points, coordination of people and data management to have appropriate support solutions.
