On February 4, Hue Central Hospital announced that the 15th heart transplant patient performed at the hospital had just been discharged and returned home.
Earlier, at noon on January 13, 2025, an urgent call from the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center changed the life of a patient. The precious heart donated from a brain-dead person at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City was brought to Hue Central Hospital thanks to the quick and accurate coordination from the relevant parties, opening up a chance of life for a patient with dilated cardiomyopathy.
Patient N.T.T (41 years old, from Gia Lai) suffered from end-stage heart disease and was in critical condition. This disease had deprived him of his health for 8 years, causing him and his family to fall into misery.
With a faint hope, he waited for the chance to receive a heart transplant. After a successful heart transplant on January 14, 2025, his health condition improved dramatically, and 2 weeks later, his heart function reached 60%.
Thanks to the effective coordination from the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center, along with close coordination from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Hue Central Hospital, relevant agencies, and supporting organizations, the donor heart arrived on time and was successfully transplanted. After 13 hours of surgery, the patient was extubated and his health was stable.
Those involved such as Vietnam Airlines, Phu Bai International Airport, and the traffic police force played an important role in ensuring the transportation process and saving the patient's life.
While Mr. T.’s family was unable to reunite for Tet, they were filled with joy when he recovered. Deep gratitude was sent to the donor’s family and Dr. Dustin Triet Nguyen, who sponsored the heart transplant.
