Patient An (38 years old) has just undergone cervical spine welding surgery after being diagnosed with severe cervical spine tricuspid herniation.
The MRI scan results at Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City showed that the patient had severe disc herniation from C3 to C7, accompanied by cervical spineoredoredoredoredoredored and spinal cord compression in C5, C6.In addition, the patient also had a disc herniation in the lumbar spine, causing severe nerve compression in L4, L5.
According to MSc.Dr. Vu Duc Thang - Department of Spine, Orthopedic Trauma Center, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, the main reason is the habit of patients using too many phones.
Dr. Thang said: "Tilting your head to answer the phone and looking at the phone regularly can be the cause of cervical spine disease in young people without a history of spinal degeneration like in patients".
Doctor Thang explained that an adult's head weighs about 4-5 kg.When looking at a phone or laptop screen, the head is often pointed forward and bent down, causing the pressure on the neck to increase by 27 kg.This causes the muscles of the neck and joints to be overloaded, causing pain and damage. In the long run, this condition leads to hunchback and promotes rapid degeneration.
The patient underwent surgery using the method of frontal interstitial bone welding - a less invasive method, preserving maximum muscle and soft tissue behind the spine. Thanks to that, the recovery process is faster and the risk of nerve damage is reduced. The surgery lasted 2.5 hours, using 8 screws to fix the vertebrae. After surgery, the pain was significantly reduced and mobility improved.
In the first 3 months after surgery, the patient needs to be closely monitored to ensure good bone marrow. The patient's back pain and weakness in the limbs also improved significantly. In addition to treatment, patients are advised to change their living habits to avoid recurrence.
Dr. Thang warns that using too many phones is harmful to spinal health if not used properly.
"When using a phone, keep the screen at eye level, rest for 15-30 minutes/time and do neck and finger stretching exercises," the doctor recommends. This helps reduce pressure on the spine and prevent damage to fingers and wrists from surfing the phone for too long.
In modern society, the use of electronic devices is inevitable. However, using it properly and having healthy habits will protect spinal health and prevent serious damage.
