The leading cause of kidney disease is diabetes (diabetes) and high blood pressure. Some factors such as age, heredity or family history cannot be controlled, however, diet and lifestyle are still factors that you can completely proactively adjust to protect your kidneys.
Maintain a balanced diet
Both the Mediterranean diet and the DASH diet support kidney health. Both of these diets encourage increasing fruits, vegetables, whole grains and plant-based proteins such as beans, nuts. At the same time, limit red meat, processed foods, sugar and salt.
Limit sugary drinks
Drinking too many sugary drinks increases the risk of diabetes, thereby affecting the kidneys. Besides filtered water, you can try unsweetened tea to reduce added sugar.
In addition, if you have a family history of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, obesity, kidney stones or over 60 years old, you should consult a doctor. High-risk groups may need periodic tests to monitor kidney health.
