Recommendations for preventing alcohol poisoning
After the drinking session, Mr. C.V.C (40 years old) lay unconscious in the toilet. The family promptly discovered and took Mr. C to Xuyen A General Hospital (HCMC) for emergency treatment. The patient was diagnosed with alcohol poisoning accompanied by inhaled pneumonia, requiring a breathing tube (endotracheal tube), ventilated and is currently being treated in the Intensive Care Unit.
After 10 days of intensive treatment, the patient was removed from the endotracheal tube, and the condition gradually stabilized. This case warns about the serious consequences that alcohol and beer can cause.

BS.CKII Nguyen Tan Phat - Head of the Intensive Care Unit of Xuyen A General Hospital said that alcohol poisoning occurs when the body absorbs too much ethanol alcohol in a short time or uses alcohol containing methanol. When the amount of alcohol exceeds the liver's metabolic capacity, the high alcohol concentration in the blood will inhibit the central nervous system, seriously affecting respiration, circulation and function of many organs.
Especially alcohol mixed with methanol, when drunk, can lead to brain damage, irreversible vision, and in some cases lead to death if not diagnosed and treated promptly.
Dr. Tan Phat recommends that to reduce the risk of alcohol poisoning, people should limit drinking beer and alcohol; do not participate in drinking games or drink according to trends; drink enough water during alcohol consumption; eat full before drinking alcohol to slow down the alcohol absorption process; do not drink alcohol while using medication because it can cause dangerous interactions.
Dr. Phat emphasized that only use alcohol with clear origin and source; absolutely do not drink floating alcohol, homemade alcohol or alcohol with unknown ingredients. Do not mix alcohol with soft drinks or other types of drinks because it can cause the body to absorb alcohol faster and make it difficult to control the amount of alcohol you have drunk.
After drinking alcohol, if the patient shows signs such as lethargy, difficulty waking up, nonsense, disorientation, frequent vomiting, slow or weak breathing, convulsions, cyanosis or coma, family members need to quickly take the patient to the nearest medical facility for timely treatment intervention.
