In a small degraded house, the family of Mr. Ly Tai (63 years old) and Mrs. Thach Thi Suol (61 years old), residing in Xay Da A hamlet, Ho Dac Kien commune (Can Tho City) still silently shoulder the burden of life and take care of their disabled granddaughter.
Mr. Ly Tai said that more than a year ago he had a stroke, so his health declined and he was no longer able to do heavy work. Currently, the family's main source of income depends on his wife's small sugarcane juice cart - Mrs. Thach Thi Suol - selling next to Tra Quyt Moi Pagoda. Every day, she only earns about 50,000 VND to cover living expenses for the whole family.
Since I had a stroke, my health has been weak, so I can't do much. All expenses mainly come from my wife's sugarcane juice cart," Mr. Tai said.
The couple does not have land, all 5 children have established their own families, and life is also difficult, so there are few conditions to support them. In the house built with state support many years ago, currently, the couple is taking care of their 40-year-old daughter and two young grandchildren.
The most pitiful is the 8-year-old girl - the youngest daughter of this girl who is congenitally disabled. Since birth, she has often had convulsions, cannot walk or sit, only lies in one place. She also does not know how to hold or take care of herself, all daily activities must completely rely on relatives.
The child's mother is 40 years old this year, currently working as a day laborer for a seafood company, the job is sometimes there and sometimes not, so her income is very precarious. According to relatives, her spirit is also not sharp, so taking care of her children is difficult. Both of her children have no father due to difficult circumstances.
The baby's older sister, who is 15 years old this year, has also dropped out of school for 3 years to stay at home to help grandparents take care of her younger sibling and take care of family matters.
Grandparents also take care of another grandchild because their parents are working at a company but their circumstances are also no less difficult.
According to Ms. Le Thi Kim Xuyen, Women's Union of Xay Da A hamlet (Ho Dac Kien commune, Can Tho city), Mr. Ly Tai's family is in difficult circumstances in the locality.
My granddaughter has been disabled since she was little, and the older she gets, the heavier she becomes, so carrying her is very hard for her grandparents. Every time she is hungry or uncomfortable, she only knows how to cry because she can't do anything on her own," Ms. Xuyen shared.
Also according to Ms. Xuyen, if there is a stroller, Ms. Suol can take her grandchild to the sugarcane juice selling place to both earn a living and conveniently look after him. This will help reduce the burden of taking care of the grandchild for the elderly grandparents.
If I leave my grandchild at home, no one will look after him, and staying at home to keep him, I cannot trade," Ms. Xuyen said.
