For many months, at the Hepatobiliary Department - National Children's Hospital (Hanoi), Ms. Hoang Thi Hoa (born in 2000) has almost never left the hospital bed - where her youngest son - baby Quach Huu Minh Khang (born February 2, 2026) - is being treated. Only a few months old, Minh Khang has faced many serious diseases: bile pigmentation disorders, blood clotting disorders, risk of stage F3 cirrhosis, malnutrition and slow development.
Ms. Hoa recounted that when her child was only 20 days old, the family discovered that the baby had abnormal jaundice. It was thought to be just a common disease in newborns, but after many hospitalizations, the condition became increasingly serious and critical. The baby continuously had a high fever, sometimes up to 40 degrees, and had to be transferred from Nghe An to Hanoi for treatment.
There are days when my child has a high fever and cries continuously, but I don't know what to do. Seeing my tiny child suffering pain, I can only hug my child and cry...", Ms. Hoa choked up sharing.
After many in-depth tests, including sending samples abroad, doctors concluded that Minh Khang had serious liver and gallbladder disease, and he was indicated for liver transplantation in the near future if he wanted to maintain his life. This is a difficult case, with very high treatment and surgery costs, far exceeding the family's ability.

Since her child developed the disease, Ms. Hoa was forced to temporarily stop working at a leather shoe company to stay in the hospital to take care of her child full-time. The two mothers and children relied on each other during the long days of treatment. "Sometimes I collapsed, worried to the point of insomnia, just afraid that one day I would not be able to keep my child," Ms. Hoa said sadly.
In his hometown, Mr. Quach Huu Tien (born in 1996) - Ms. Hoa's husband - became the sole breadwinner, supporting the whole family. In addition to working freelance during the day, he also takes advantage of working overtime in the evening to earn extra income. However, a total income of about 10 million VND/month still cannot meet Minh Khang's increasing treatment costs.
No matter how much I do, it's not enough. Many times I'm helpless, I just know how to cry because I feel sorry for my child. I just hope to have money to save my child, but my strength is limited...", Mr. Tien shared.
Mr. Tien and Ms. Hoa's family has 4 children, of which the three older children are still in school and young. All living expenses depend on the father's meager income. Meanwhile, the cost of medicine for Minh Khang alone is about 7 million VND/month, not including hospital fees, tests and incurred treatment costs. The total treatment cost since baby Minh Khang was born to date has reached more than 70 million VND - mostly borrowed from relatives and banks.
According to Ms. Hoa, currently, Minh Khang's health condition is still very worrying. The baby often coughs, has to use up to 13 types of medicine each day and is closely monitored. Doctors recommend early liver transplantation to avoid bad developments, but the amount of money needed for surgery is too large for a young family.
Baby Minh Khang's journey ahead is still very long and full of challenges. In the current situation, the family is almost exhausted from managing.
Talking to a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Le Duc Chung - Head of Tien Phong Residential Group, Quynh Mai Ward, Nghe An Province - said that Ms. Hoang Thi Hoa's family is in difficult circumstances in the locality.
The couple is still young, has many children, and now the youngest child is suffering from a serious illness, the treatment costs are too high, so life is very difficult. The locality has also grasped the situation and provided initial care and support, but resources are still limited," Mr. Chung shared.
