At a small house in Tan Thanh village, Ham Yen commune (Tuyen Quang province), Ms. Dang Thi Hue's family (born in 1995) is experiencing heavy days since her young daughter Ta Thanh Van (born in 2023) contracted blood cancer.
Before her child got sick, Ms. Hue worked as a worker at a leather shoe company. The job was hard but brought a stable income to take care of her two children with her husband. Since Thanh Van fell ill, Ms. Hue has been forced to quit her job, stay at home to take care of and take her child for treatment.
According to Ms. Hue, at the time of discovering the disease, Thanh Van had a continuous fever for 3 days at home, the family gave her medicine but the fever did not decrease. On the morning of January 22, 2026, she took her child to Tuyen Quang Provincial General Hospital for examination and tests. The doctor announced that her child had signs of blood cancer and introduced the family to take the baby to Hanoi National Children's Hospital for in-depth examination.
At about 11 pm, my mother and I came to Hanoi. The doctor gave emergency treatment and immediately performed tests. On January 23, 2026, my child underwent bone marrow puncture. The results accurately determined that my child had blood cancer. On January 25, 2026, my child started chemotherapy," Ms. Hue recounted.
The days that followed were a series of days the family had to live with the hospital, medicine and successive chemotherapy sessions. By the 3rd chemotherapy session, Thanh Van's body became more tired, and at the same time a reaction to drugs appeared.
In addition, some types of medicine are outside the insurance list, making treatment costs an overwhelming burden for poor families. Some doses of medicine, according to Ms. Hue, the family had to buy outside with an amount of up to 47 million VND. To have money to treat their child's illness, she and her husband borrowed from relatives and family members; the total amount borrowed to date has reached 115 million VND.
Families all come to places where they can borrow money. When old debts cannot be repaid, I don't know how to manage so that my child can continue treatment in the future," Ms. Hue said choked up.
Ms. Hue's husband - Mr. Ta Van Trung (born in 1990), currently works as a motorbike repairman, earning about 8 million VND/month. That amount of money must be taken care of for the whole family, while the wife has quit her job and both children need care.
“When I can't find money, I have to delay taking medicine 2-3 times. Each time I have a fever, leg pain. I feel so sorry for my child, but many times the family really has no money left,” Ms. Hue said with tears in her eyes.
Not only his young daughter, but also his eldest son Ta Trung Kien (born in 2015) also worried Ms. Hue and her husband. Kien is good at studying, has been an excellent student for many years, but his health is weak, and he often has chest pain. By grade 6, he only weighed 23kg. A few days ago, Kien had chest pain and shortness of breath, and his family took him to the hospital, but he was instructed to go to Hanoi because the provincial level was not qualified for in-depth examination.
Ms. Hue herself also suffered sequelae after the traffic accident in 2021, having broken 7 vertebrae and 2 cervical vertebrae. Having just paid off debts and returned to work for about 1 year, she had to quit her job because her child was sick. The pain still remained, but she did not dare to go for regular check-ups and medication because all the money had to be spent on her child.
Both families are in difficulty. My parents-in-law are farmers, they can only support a small part; my biological mother has a brain tumor, so she does not have the conditions to help. In front of the family are treatment phases that are not known when they will end...", Ms. Hue said with tears in her eyes.
For Ms. Hue, the only wish at this time is for her daughter not to be late for medicine due to lack of money.
