Pre-match information
Jannik Sinner has extended his streak of reaching at least the quarterfinals in every tournament he has entered this year, after overcoming Tommy Paul in the fourth round of the 2024 US Open.
The Italian deserves huge credit for staying focused amid controversy surrounding two positive drugs tests earlier this year. Sinner became the first player this year to reach the quarterfinals or better at all four Grand Slams.
Unfortunately, the Australian Open remained Sinner's only Grand Slam win, as he was then eliminated in the semi-finals of the French Open and the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.
The US Open is the only Grand Slam where the world No. 1 has never reached the semi-finals. In his previous five appearances, he has only reached the quarter-finals once, losing to Carlos Alcaraz.
Medvedev is the most successful Grand Slam player of all time, and his form so far puts him in a strong position to compete for the title.
The Russian's journey to the quarter-finals has been relatively smooth, but such easy paths at this level rarely last long. He now faces a title favourite in the quarter-finals - a match that could have been a trophy show had he not fallen out of the top four a few months ago.
Interestingly, for some reason, Medvedev plays better against world No. 1s than against No. 2s and No. 3s. He has won 7 of his 12 meetings with No. 1s, while against No. 2s and No. 3s he is 4-16.
Another advantage Medvedev has coming into this match is his incredible record on North American hard courts over the past six years. At the US Open, he is undefeated in the quarterfinals (4-0) and has reached three finals, winning once against Novak Djokovic in 2021.
Medvedev leads 7-5 in the head-to-head stats, but he has also been one of the biggest victims of Sinner's remarkable transformation over the past 12 months.
Medvedev's 6-0 lead all but disappeared as Sinner won five straight matches - from Beijing last year to this year's Miami Masters, before the Russian snapped the losing streak at Wimbledon to much relief.
