China Daily reported that at around 3:30 p.m. on June 21, 1 person accidentally fell into the Fujiang River, Tongjia Village, Mixin Town, Tongnan District, Chongqing. 8 children playing on the banks of the Fujiang River. When they saw the victim fall into the water, the remaining 7 children tried to rescue him.
Preliminary investigation shows that the 8 victims were all primary school students in the town. At 7:00 a.m. on June 22, the local authorities confirmed that all 8 people had died.
Heavy rain has been forecast in the area, but there is no basis to conclude that the weather was the cause of the drowning.
Heavy rains and floods have occurred in China in the past week. On June 17, the National Meteorological Center of China raised the warning to level 2 in a system of 4 warning levels for storms and floods.
Floods have affected many areas, causing authorities to evacuate thousands of people, temporary disruptions to roads and many houses to be isolated.
The police are currently investigating the cause of the incident.
